Posted by | Ray Cornelius

They don’t call Jay Z, HOV for nothing!

The multi-platinum selling rapper and entrepreneur is the third most searched celebrity of this year. According to Billboard, Blue Ivy’s proud papa beat out Kim Kardashian, who ranks at #4 and the late Joan Rivers, who came in at #5.  The list, which is compiled by Ask.com, surveys all of the queries of its 100 million global users between the dates of January 1 through November 15.

Other celebrities that made the list are Jennifer Lawrence, Ray Rice, and Derek Jeter. Surprisingly, Jay Z’s sister-in-law, Solange Knowles, was not on the list considering the elevator brawl that took place between the two of them last Spring. Not to mention, her recent wedding photos to video director, Alan Ferguson, that seem to appear on everyone’s Facebook timeline.

Also noticeably absent from the list is comedian Bill Cosby, whose been under fire regarding old and new allegations that he drugged and raped several women. Although most of these charges are from a 2006 situation, Cosby had to cancel recent tour dates and even had his upcoming show pulled by NBC.

3. Jay Z

5. Joan Rivers
6. Ray Rice

The Queen Latifah Show issues statement regarding ‘canceled’ segment w/Cosby

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Another day, another celebrity scandal. This time it involves America’s favorite television dad, Bill Cosby.  Apparently, Cosby was supposed to appear on The Queen Latifah Show but producers got “cold feet” after comments that were made last week by comedian Hannibal Buress accusing Cosby of raping 13 women.

“Bill Cosby has the f–king smuggest old black man public persona that I hate,” Buress said. “‘Pull your pants up, black people. I was on TV in the ’80s. I can talk down to you, because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you raped women, Bill Cosby. So, brings you down a couple notches. I don’t curse on stage. But yeah, you’re a rapist.”

TMZ  reported Thursday that the show canceled Cosby’s segment. However, a spokesperson for the daytime talky is saying otherwise.

“Mr. Cosby’s scheduled appearance on The Queen Latifah Show was postponed at his request and was in no way related to any of our recent or upcoming scheduled guests,” according to TheWrap.

Hannibal was referring to the 2006 situation where Andrea Constand, a  former Temple University employee, accused Cosby of drugging her and sexually assaulted her in his Philadelphia-area mansion in 2004.  13 other witnesses also filed claims against the beloved actor and comedian. Cosby eventually settled out of court with Constand and was never charged for sexual assault.

Bill Cosby to star in new family comedy for NBC

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

America’s favorite TV Dad, Bill Cosby is planning to return to primetime in a new family comedy for NBC.  The 77-year-old comedic actor announced the news earlier this year, however details were a bit vague.  Well now THR is confirming that NBC is indeed moving forward with the series with plans to debut it summer or fall 2015.

The untitled show is being described as a “classic, big extended family sitcom” and is written and produced by Mike Sikowitz and Mike O’Malley. Cosby will also co-star as the family patriarch and father to three married daughters with children.

The comedy legend made television magic with NBC in the 80’s with the groundbreaking program, The Cosby Show.  A return to the network is exactly what he feels viewers have been waiting for a long time.

“I want to be able to deliver a wonderful show to [a] network because there is a viewership out there that wants to see comedy, and warmth, and love, and surprise, and cleverness, without going into the party attitude,”  Cosby said to THR in January. “They would like to see a married couple that acts like they love each other, warts and all, children who respect the parenting, and the comedy of people who make mistakes. Warmth and forgiveness. So I hope to get that opportunity, and I will deliver the best of Cosby, and that will be a series, I assume, that we could get enough people week after week after week to tune in to, to come along with us.”

Debbie Allen tweets about bringing ‘A Different World’ back to TV

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Legendary dance choreographer and television producer Debbie Allen wants to put Hillman College back on the block.

According to theGrio, Allen recently tweeted about her interview in the new issue of Ebony magazine in which she talks about the 25th anniversary of the ground-breaking sitcom. She also revealed her desire to bring the show back to television and asked her followers for support.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, A Different World was transformed “from a bland Cosby spinoff into a lively, socially responsible, ensemble situation comedy” only after Debbie Allen took over as producer-director following the first season.

A Different World star Jasmine Guy, who played the sassy southern-belle Whitley Gilbert, alluded to this when RC interviewed her back in February:

“Debbie being a graduate of Howard University was like, ‘This is not real Black college life.’ And so, she insisted that the writers come down and visit Historically Black College University’s like Spelman and Morehouse. I mean she made huge creative changes. Debbie also brought flavor to the show like, the frat show…the South African show…the date rape show…the AIDS show. And all of these shows, she had to fight for. So that’s a credit to her.”

A Different World ran for six seasons on NBC from 1987-1993.

What are your thoughts on Allen bringing it back to television?

Mary J. Blige and Bill Cosby participate in Beverly Hills Hotel 100 Year Celebration Weekend…

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Everyone’s favorite dad and jazz aficionado Bill Cosby kicked off the Beverly Hills Hotel 100 Year Celebration Weekend this past Friday evening. Cosby entertained about 200 guests poolside, swapping stories about the famous hotel and acting as the “unofficial” conductor for an 8-piece jazz band.

The Queen of Hip-Soul Mary J. Blige heated up things Saturday evening as she delivered a stellar five-song set in the Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom.  The “Rock of Ages” actress, who has been quite busy juggling music and movies, recalled a fond memory of the hotel.  “I fell in love with the man I married here. Boom.”

Also on hand for Mary’s performance was the “Purple One” himself, Prince who reportedly entered the ballroom very incognito [through the kitchen] and just in time for Blige’s last song.

The weekend’s festivities supported the Motion Picture & Television fund with Friday’s event offering special support to the newly founded, American Comedy Fund. This is a new project that was created to help comics in need.
