Just Kickin’ It! ‘The Rise of Sneaker Culture’ is coming to ATL’s High Museum (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Atlanta’s High Museum of Art will examine the sneaker’s complex social history and its immense cultural significance in a new exhibit, The Rise of Sneaker Culture, beginning June 11-August 14, 2016.  This exhibition includes 155 sneakers and follows the evolution of the sneaker from its origins in the mid-nineteenth century to its role in the present day as a status symbol of urban culture and marker of masculine identity.

Included are works from the archives of manufacturers such as Adidas, Converse, Nike, Puma, and Reebok as well as private collectors such as hip-hop legend Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia, and Dee Wells of Obsessive Sneaker Disorder. Also featured are sneakers by Prada and other major fashion design houses and designers as well as those made in collaboration with artists including Damien Hirst and Kanye West. Film footage, interactive media, photographic images, and design drawings contextualize the sneakers and explore the social history, technical innovations, fashion trends, and marketing campaigns that have shaped sneaker culture over the past two centuries.

The Rise of Sneaker Culture is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Bata Shoe Museum. The exhibition is curated by Elizabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum.

‘Fresh Dressed’ Poster Revealed…

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The first poster for the upcoming film on the evolution of hip-hop fashion, “Fresh Dressed,” was released and it includes an iconic image of Biz Markie. As previously reported, The 2015 Sundance film chronicles the history of Hip-Hop/Urban fashion and its rise from southern cotton plantations to the gangs of 1970s in the South Bronx, to corporate America, and everywhere in-between. Supported by rich archival materials and in depth interviews with individuals crucial to the evolution of a way of life–and the outsiders who studied and admired them–Fresh Dressed goes to the core of where style was born on the black and brown side of town. Expect interviews from Kanye West, Diddy, Pharrell Williams, Kid ‘n’Play, Big Daddy Kane, Andre Leon Talley and more!

Beyoncé, Common, Mary J. Blige, Kanye & Rihanna to perform at TONIGHT’S Grammys

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The biggest night in music is turning out to be one of the biggest nights of collaborations. Tonight’s Grammy Awards’ performance roster includes a bevy of all-star duets including Rihanna and Kanye West with Beatles legend, Paul McCartney. The reigning Queen of R&B-Hip-hop-Soul, Mary J. Blige is teaming up with the reigning King of British Soul, Sam SmithVoice  co-stars Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani are sure to set the stage on fiyah as well as Tom Jones with Jessie J and Hozier with former Eurythmics’ front woman, Annie Lennox.

Jazz legend Tony Bennett is performing with his current muse, Lady Gaga while music icon, Herbie Hancock will share the stage with John Mayer, Questlove and Ed Sheeren.  The pairing that has a lot of folks talking already is Beyoncé with Common and John Legend for a tribute to the Oscar nominated film, “Selma.”  Reportedly, Bey will be singing the Mahalia Jackson classic,“Precious Lord” which was originally performed in the movie by Grammy-nominee, Ledisi.  I’m sure social media will be off the chain during this portion of the show since many of Ledisi’s fans feel that she is being snubbed.

Also look for Grammy nominees Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Hudson, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift to present awards tonight as well as a much deserved tribute to Motown legend, Stevie Wonder, who picks up the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tonight’s show airs on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. and is once again hosted by LL Cool J.

New Music Monday – Rihanna ‘Four Five Seconds’ ft. Kanye West & Paul McCartney

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Pop superstar Rihanna dropped a new single over the weekend titled “Four Five Seconds.” The feel good song features hip-hop titan Kanye West and Beatles’ legend Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar. This is quite a departure from Rihanna’s electronic dance music sound but I like it. Let’s hope her fans do as well. Her next album, R8  is reportedly debuting later on this year and if this is any indication of her new direction, we can’t wait!
