‘CREED II’ star Tessa Thompson covers ESSENCE for November

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

CONGRATS to CREED II starlet Tessa Thompson. She is the latest beauty to cover ESSENCE. The magazine posted the image of the versatile actress on Instagram along with the following caption:

“@tessamaethompson has gone from Hollywood’s best-kept secret to an official IT girl,” said ESSENCE on Instagram. “I like the idea of expanding perceptions of what a woman can be & what a woman of color can be.”

Thompson was shot by 20-year photography veteran Shaniqwa Jarvis and expressed her sincere appreciation for the collaboration.

“It feels really refreshing to be shot by a woman,” says Thompson to ESSENCE. “Actresses are so often subject to the male gaze. The highest sense of praise and honor is being seen by a woman and feeling acceptance from other Black women, just a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. That, to me, is so profound.”

ESSENCE will hit newsstands on October 26.

Rihanna for VOGUE’s June Issue [PHOTOS]

Posted by  | Ray Cornelius

Music and fashion icon—RIHANNA—is the latest celeb to grace the cover of VOGUE Magazine. The singer and budding actress opens up about life after turning the big 3-0 and her new business ventures Savage X Fenty and Fenty Beauty. She also talks about losing her cousin to gun violence and how she will be a mother.

“I’m not gonna be able to take my eyes off my kid. I know that already about myself,” she says. “They’re going to have to force me to hire a nanny.”

Check out a few more photos and excepts from the interview below:

On finding personal time: “Even mentally, just to be away from my phone, to be in the moment, that has been key for my growth,” she says. “Now, when I come to work, I’m all in. Because before you know it, the years will go by. I’m glad I’m taking the time. I’m happy.”

On loving herself and her new body: “You’ve just got to laugh at yourself, honestly. I mean, I know when I’m having a fat day and when I’ve lost weight. I accept all of the bodies,” she says, shrugging her shoulders. “I’m not built like a Victoria’s Secret girl, and I still feel very beautiful and confident in my lingerie.”

On being a role model too early: “That title was put on me when I was just finding my way, making mistakes in front of the world. I didn’t think it was fair,” she says. “Now I understand the concept, but at that time I was the same age as the girls who were looking up to me. And that’s a really hard place to be in as a teenager.”

Watch Trailer for ‘Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The “original” Queen of Shock—GRACE JONES is the subject of a new documentary that will be arriving in theaters on Friday, April 13 titled Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami.

Larger than life, wild, scary and androgynous – Miss Grace Jones plays all these parts. Yet here we also discover her as a lover, daughter, mother, sister and even grandmother, as she submits herself to our gaze and allows us to understand what constitutes her mask. The stage is where her most extreme embodiments are realized and her theatrical imagination lets loose: this is where the musical of her life is played out.

The film includes Grace’s unique performances singing iconic hits such as “Slave To The Rhythm,” “Pull Up To The Bumper,” as well as the more recent autobiographical tracks “Williams’ Bloods” and “Hurricane.” These personal songs also link to Grace’s family life, as the film takes us on a holiday road trip across Jamaica, where her family roots and the story of her traumatic childhood are uncovered.

In Jamaican patois, ‘Bloodlight’ is the red light that illuminates when an artist is recording and ‘Bami’ means bread, the substance of daily life. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami weaves together the layers of Grace Jones’ public and private life, as she moves effortlessly between different facets: she is gypsy, artist and partying hedonist, warm and funny but also a fierce and tenacious businesswoman.

The performance continues to move thematically though the film, with “Love Is The Drug” acting like an aria, bringing the film to its final and most touching scenes. This is a Grace we have not seen before, someone who reminds us of what it is to dare to be truly alive.

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is directed by Sophie Fiennes.

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has announced a new exhibition at the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film, featuring costumes from the Hulu original drama The Handmaid’s Tale. The exhibition, which includes more than 40 garments from seasons one and two of the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning television series , produced by MGM Television, will be on view from April 30 – Aug. 12.

“The beauty of SCAD degree programs lives in the direct connection between classroom instruction and industry – you see it in everything SCAD does, including the celebrated exhibitions of our teaching museums,” said SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace. “Our university is top-ranked for the study of costume design, and we’re pleased to welcome the year’s most acclaimed costume designs to SCAD FASH. Prepare to step inside the world of fashion and the world of film with this sensational exhibition of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ at SCAD FASH, America’s only museum of fashion and film.”

The SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film collaborated with award-winning designer Ane Crabtree to design the exhibition. Crabtree was nominated for a 2017 Emmy for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale and has earned three nominations from the Costume Designers Guild for Westworld, Masters of Sex and Pan Am. In 2018, she earned the Costume Designers Guild award for ‘excellence in contemporary television’ for her work with The Handmaid’s Tale.

“Ane Crabtree is someone who can tell stories with clothes, and the impact the show’s wardrobe has had in the political conversation around the world has been groundbreaking, but honestly not surprising,” said The Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller. “She’s a genius, and fabulous human being, and we’re thrilled that SCAD is honoring her work.”

To celebrate the opening, Hulu is partnering with SCADFILM to host a screening of The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 2, Episode 3 on Mon., April 30, at SCADshow in Atlanta, followed by a Q+A discussion with cast and producers of the award-winning series. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

The Handmaid’s Tale follows the story of a dystopian future that forces women into subservient roles after an uprising against the US government. The show is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood‘s 1985 novel of the same title, which won the 1985 Governor General’s Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. The series stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel and Samira Wiley, among others.
