Idris Elba x ESSENCE for August Cover (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Check out Golden Globe winner Idris Elba‘s new photoshoot for ESSENCE Magazine. The “Luther” star is next month’s featured celebrity and opens up about his six film projects including “Yardie.” It is the big screen adaptation of Victor Headley‘s novel of the same name and one that Elba is passionate about directing.

“For me, I’m making that story because A, it’s a part of the reason I became a man. I was born in 1972, and that’s just my era. And B, there’s a big, big music component. I love music and I love film. This is my chance to marry the two.”

Elba also confesses that he is done with marriage and has no plans on jumping the broom anytime soon…

“Am I ever gonna get remarried? I don’t think so. Yeah, I don’t think so,” he says. “Marriage is an institution of sorts. And I’ve done it. It’s not for everybody. It’s not my life’s calling.”

The noticeably slim Elba was training for a Muay Thai fighting documentary in Thailand at the time of the photoshoot and decided to use the country’s lush vegetation and artistic splendor as the backdrop for his video.

‘Shaft’ remake in the works #ShutYoMouf

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Before Richard Roundtree was Gabrielle Union‘s father on “Being Mary Jane,” he was our first Black kickass superhero simply known as SHAFT. It was the first time Hollywood had ever shown an African-American private detective that was as smooth as he was deadly and the role broke many racial barriers on film screens around the world in 1971. With a dope theme song, written and performed by BlackMoses aka Isaac Hayes, “Shaft” would become one of the most iconic figures of the 70s Blaxploitation film era.

Roundtree would eventually go on to make two more films—“Shaft’s Big Score” in 1972 and “Shaft in Africa” in 1973 and served as an international symbol of Black power, pride, sexuality and masculinity. He was Black and macho and audiences ate it up like a bowl of collard greens and cornbread. The film was also directed by famed photographer and eclectic filmmaker Gordon Parks.

Fast forward to 2000 and “Shaft” was resurrected thanks to director John Singleton and award winning-actor Samuel L. Jackson. He starred as the nephew of the legendary John Shaft along with the amazing Jeffrey Wright as the Dominican drug lordPeoples Hernandez.

Well it looks like award winning-director Tim Story is teaming up with New Line to bring Shaft back to the big screen with an updated storyline. According to DEADLINE, a remake is in the works that will be scripted by ‘black-ish” creator Kenya Barris. The film will also focus on “the son of the cool private eye who always finds himself navigating the gray terrain between the law and organized crime in New York City.”

No word yet on who Story has in mind to play Shaft, so I’ve provided at least 10 actors who I think cool pull this off. Let me know your thoughts below…Id’ love to hear from you.

Idris Elba tells INTERVIEW: ‘I do worry about whether I’m going to burn out’ [PHOTOS]

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Golden Globe winning-actor Idris Elba will be the first to admit that he has a lot going on. Between his grueling television and film schedules, red carpet appearances, photoshoots, interviews and DJing gigs, Elba is truly a man in demand. But could all of this fame and success be too much even for him? Well, that is a concern he expressed in the newest edition of INTERVIEW.

10fd4491ed45c6fe2d142ef951efac4fLondon’s leading man covers the magazine and opens up about all of his current projects including “The Jungle Book,” “Star Trek” and “The Dark Tower.” He also says he wonders if multitasking will have any effects on him later in life and how he doesn’t want his fans to grow weary of seeing him.

“I don’t want to sound ungrateful or anything, but I sleep less, I’m constantly thinking, I’m constantly multitasking, and I really don’t know what the effects are going to be when I’m older. I don’t ever stop. Not because I’m greedy or anything, but I’m always creating, debating with the part of my brain that is dormant. Wondering how I can move in and create a bit more space and take a bit more time. But it’s almost like the more I achieve, the more capacity I have to achieve. I do worry sometimes about whether I’m going to burn out. Not burn myself out, but burn my art out, with audiences going, “Ah, yeah, I’ve seen enough now, thanks very much.”

Idris Elba wants to play jazz great Thelonius Monk (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

He’s already portrayed the legendary Nelson Mandela, now Golden Globe-winning actor Idris Elba has his sights set on another icon—Thelonius Monk. According to The Times of India, Elba wants to portray the one of his musical heroes in a new biopic.

thelonious-monk-photo-by-jim-marshall-from-stop-smiling-34“Thelonious Monk. He was a legendary jazz musician. When jazz was popular in the early 50s, Monk came along and just did something weird with it and everyone was like, ‘He’s a bit odd.’ He had mental health issues he didn’t realise he had for a long time, but he was an absolute genius because he just came in and broke all the rules”.

Apparently Elba is fascinated by the late musician’s ability to make great music while dealing with mental illness.

According to Monk’s Wikipedia page, he is the second most recorded jazz composer following Duke Ellington. He died of a stroke on February 17, 1982 at age 64 and was buried in Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. He was also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 posthumously and was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for “a body of distinguished and innovative musical composition that has had a significant and enduring impact on the evolution of jazz.”

Check out Ledisi‘s version of Monk’s monster hit “Round Midnight” below. It is the most recorded jazz standard composed by a jazz musician ever.

Check out the images below along with the quotes and a clip from the film:

THE JUNGLE BOOK - Lupita Nyong'o voices Raksha, a mother wolf who cares deeply for all of her pups—including man-cub Mowgli, whom she adopts as one of her own when he's abandoned in the jungle as an infant. "She is the protector, the eternal mother," says Nyong'o. "The word Raksha actually means protection in Hindi. I felt really connected to that, wanting to protect a son that isn’t originally hers but one she’s taken for her own." Photo by: Sarah Dunn. ©2016 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

THE JUNGLE BOOK - Bagheera is a sleek panther who feels it's his duty to help the man-cub depart with dignity when it's time for him to leave his jungle home. "Bagheera is Mowgli’s adoptive parent," says Ben Kingsley, who lends his voice to Bagheera. "His role in Mowgli’s life is to educate, to protect and to guide. My Bagheera was military—he’s probably a colonel. He is instantly recognizable by the way he talks, how he acts and what his ethical code is." Photo by: Sarah Dunn. ©2016 Disney Enterprises, Inc. THE JUNGLE BOOK - Kaa is a massive python who uses her voice and hypnotic gaze to entrance Mowgli. The man-cub can't resist her captivating embrace. "Kaa seduces and entraps Mowgli with her storytelling," says Scarlett Johansson. "She's the mirror into Mowgli's past. The way she moves is very alluring, almost coquettish." THE JUNGLE BOOK - Akela is the strong and hardened alpha-male wolf who shoulders the responsibility of his pack. He welcomes Mowgli to the family, but worries he may one day compromise their safety. "Akela is a fierce patriarch of the wolf pack," says Giancarlo Esposito, who voices the character. "He believes the strength of the pack lies in what each and every wolf offers. THE JUNGLE BOOK - King Louie is a formidable ape who desperately wants the secret of Man's deadly "red flower"--fire. He's convinced Mowgli has the information he seeks. "King Louie is huge--12 feet tall," says Christopher Walken, who voices the character. "But he's as charming as he is intimidating when he wants to be." Convinced that Mowgli poses a threat, the bengal tiger is determined to rid the jungle of the man-cub. "Shere Khan reigns with fear," says Elba.
