Issa Rae + Laura Dern join forces for HBO Series ‘The Dolls’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Insecure star and pop culture phenom Issa Rae is expanding her relationship with HBO by starring in and producing a new limited series for them titled The Dolls.

According to S&A, The Dolls will recount the aftermath of the Christmas Eve riots that took place within two small Arkansas towns in 1983 over the Cabbage Patch Kids Doll. The film will also “examine class, race, privilege and what it takes to be a good mother.”  Joining Rae on this project is iconic actress Laura Dern.

Cabbage Patch Kids were all the craze during the early 1980s and it seems as if every little girl in the country wanted one. Like many of today’s popular toys, the dolls were a “must have” item during the holiday season and parents (mothers especially) would do just about anything to get their hands on one.

Check out a 2015 Black Friday video below that vent viral showing a Caucasian mother trying to steal a toy from an African American child and then accuses his mother of being “aggressive” as she tries to take the toy back from her. #ReallyLady

Watch Trailer for ‘Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

HBO has released the trailer for Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland. It airs on Monday, December 3 at 10 p.m. EST.  Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland explores the death of Sandra Bland, a politically active 28-year-old African American who, after being arrested for a traffic violation, was found dead in her jail cell.

In 2015, Sandra was arrested for a traffic violation in a small Texas town. Three days later, She was found hanging from a noose in her jail cell. Though ruled a suicide, her death sparked allegations of racially-motivated police murder and Sandra became a poster child for activists nationwide, leaving millions to question, “What really happened to Sandra Bland?”

Ten days after Sandra’s death, filmmakers, Kate Davis and David Heilbroner began working closely with the family’s legal team, tracking the two-year battle between Sandra’s aggrieved family and Texas authorities. With disturbing, never-before-told details about the case, the film is punctuated by Sandra’s own passionate and moving commentary.

Approximately 30 “Sandy Speaks” video blogs, which Sandra created herself, allowed the filmmakers to get to know Sandra Bland in a deeply personal way. Via these videos, Sandy herself emerges as a central voice in Say Her Name — an empowered, enlightened woman of color whose sharp, humorous, charismatic remarks address subjects from educating kids about black history to police brutality to the importance of natural hair.

Say Her Name takes viewers deep inside a story that galvanized activists across the country.

WATCH Official Trailer for HBO’s ‘Baltimore Rising’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

HBO has released the official trailer for the riveting new documentary “Baltimore Rising,” which debuts on Monday, November 20 at 8 p.m. EST.

In the wake of the 2015 death of Freddie Gray in police custody, Baltimore was a city on the edge. Peaceful protests and destructive riots erupted in the immediate aftermath of Gray’s death, while the city waited to hear the fate of the six police officers involved in the incident, reflecting the deep divisions between authorities and the community — and underscoring the urgent need for reconciliation.

Directed by Sonja Sohn (one of the stars of the HBO series The Wire), “Baltimore Rising” follows activists, police officers, community leaders and gang affiliates, who struggle to hold Baltimore together, even as the homicide rate hits record levels, and explores how to make change when change is hard.

“When the uprising occurred [in 2015, following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody], I saw an opportunity to tell the city’s story from a different vantage point. I kept hearing from everybody that we need to reframe our narrative. It just seemed that I was in the right place at the right time,” said Sohn.

“Baltimore Rising” also puts a spotlight on a few activists including Genard “Shadow” Barr, Makayla Gilliam-Price, Dayvon Love and Kwame Rose.
