Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Steve Harvey is taking his ‘Think Like A Man’ concept to the small screen.

Deadline is reporting that Fox is currently developing a television adaptation of Harvey’s best selling advice book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man. The series will be written by the same team that wrote the film versions, Think Like A Man and Think Like A Man Too, Keith Merryman and David A. Newman.

Tim Story, the film’s director, will oversee the project and will executive produce alongside Gerald Washington of Steve Harvey’s production company, East 112th Street Productions, and Will Packer, who also produced the film versions.

Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man is Harvey’s thoughts about what men really think about love, sex, relationship, romance, intimacy and commitment.

All good things must come to an end…

Deadline is reporting that Will Packer and Rob Hardy have dissolved their joint company, Rainforest Films. Reportedly, the dynamic duo of motion pictures called it quits last month and released the following statement about their decision:

“The two of us have been friends for over 20 years and will continue to support each other personally and professionally,” they said in a statement to Deadline. “Our respective personal careers have taken us in different directions, and we have decided it is necessary to dissolve Rainforest Films.”

During its 20 year run, Rainforest Films released a number of hit movies including Trois, The Gospel, Stomp the Yard, This Christmas, Obsessed  and Takers.  In recent years, the two stuck box office gold with a string of romantic comedies including Think Like A Man, Ride Along, About Last Night and Think Like A Man Too, which debuted at No. 1 and made over 30 million at the box office last weekend.

As it stands, Packer has a few new projects brewing under his Will Packer Productions including No Good Deed starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson as well as Ride Along 2  and Girls Trip. Hardy will continue his directing gigs with Criminal Minds, Bones and The Vampire Diaries.

It was good while it lasted fellas!

Kevin Hart talks success and going ‘global’ in THR 2013 Comedy Issue

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Funny man Kevin Hart is on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s  2013 Comedy issue.

The annual issue spotlights rising talent that has gained momentum over the past year versus veteran acts. THR  describes this year’s class of comedians as individuals that “will do anything for a laugh, while seizing the moment and building fresh fan bases and revenue streams.”

Hart is obviously “head of the class” having scored a number of victories of the past 12 months.  From hosting Saturday Night Live  to box office hits like Think Like a Man  and his new found success with the BET series, The Real Husbands of Hollywood,  Hart has become that go-to guy in Hollywood.  In addition, Hart has two new films on the horizon including Let Me Explain  and Quick and Easy. Both films are being released through his new partnership with Lionsgate and CodeBlack Entertainment.

Hart talks about his career in a behind-the-scenes video for the special issue. He reminisces about the first time his family recognized his comedic talent as well as being an underachiever in swimming (Hart was part of the famous PDR Swim Team featured in the film, PRIDE ) and his desire to go beyond the African-American audience.

“Being in the black community, the one thing you need is the Black love first.  When you get that and they put a stamp on you and say, ‘Hey you are funny man, we like you and we’re rolling with you’ is one of the best feelings in the world.   I think the goal for me at the end of the day is to be universal.  I don’t want to appeal to just one race,”  says Hart.

‘Think Like a Man’ Sequel gets Title and Release Date

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Last year, we reported that Steve Harvey’s romantic comedy, Think Like a Man  was greenlit for a sequel but didn’t have any specifics. Well, the studios announced yesterday that the follow up film is going to be released on May 30, 2014 and was given the title “Think Like a Man Too.”  It is still not clear if the entire cast is returning or what the story will follow.

What we do know is that Rainforest Film’s Will Packer will return as the producer along with Rob Hardy while Steve Harvey will serve as executive producer. Think Like a Man  was based on Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,  grossing over $91 million.

The film featured an all-star cast including Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Terrance J, Michael Ealy, Gary Owens, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Romany Malco, and La La Anthony.

RC will keep you posted as this one continues to develop. What are your thoughts? Are you looking forward to a sequel?

Taraji P. Henson covers ‘JET’ and discusses racial inequality in Hollywood…

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Oscar-nominated beauty Taraji P. Henson doesn’t hold her tongue when talking about the racial injustice she’s experienced as a black actress in Hollywood.

If you remember, Henson was involved in a highly publicized media storm with TV guide last September when they omitted the actress from a cover that featured her “Person of Interest” white leading male co-stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. Henson was “hotter than fish grease” because she felted TV Guide was uninterested in her new role as the female lead of the show.

So Henson took to Facebook and Twitter saying, “WOW!!!! TV Guide is NOT including me on the cover with my cast members [sic]……..I am the female lead of a 3 member cast and I’m not included on the cover!!!!!! Do you see the $h_t I have to deal with in this business…..I cram to understand!!!!”

Now Henson says she is thankful to fans for standing with her and doesn’t regret her decision.

“I just stated a fact. TV Guide left the black woman out. The fans responded and the blogs picked it up. I had nothing to do with it going viral…That’s Hollywood,” Henson tells JET. “As a woman, especially a Black woman, you’ve got to keep fighting.”

The actress and single mother also dishes with JET about raising her college-bound son, her career and possibly starring in a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster, Think Like A Man.

Look for Taraji’s December 10 JET issue to hit newsstands tomorrow Monday, December 3.

You can also catch her on Person of Interest  on Thursday nights at 9pm on CBS.

The L. A. Times reports Screen Gems just made it official by asking Keith Merryman and David Newman, who wrote the first screen play.  No word yet as to whether or not the all-star cast of Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Is ‘Think Like A Man’ director Tim Story on Hollywood’s A-list?

Posted by | Cyrena Rose

Director Tim Story‘s filmmaking career places him atop all other black directors.  He is the highest grossing black director; the 5 studio movies he helmed have collectively grossed close to $900 million worldwide!  Still, he is relatively unknown & the success of Think Like A Man did not place him on Hollywood’s A-list.

According to a story posted on the L.A.Times Story’s latest film, Think Like a Man, made on a meager $12-million budget, is now a significant comedy hit, having grossed $82 million domestically in its first 24 days of release.  Making a comedy with a 7-to-1 box-office-to-budget ratio is a rare feat, the kind of success that normally catapults a director onto the A-list of comedy filmmakers.

Check out Story’s film creds:

  • Think Like A Man (2012); grossed $82 million worldwide ona $12 million budget
  • Hurricane Season (2010); went straight to DVD
  • First Sunday (2008) Producer
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007); grossed $290 million worldwide on a $130 million budget
  • Fantastic Four (2005); grossed $330 million worldwide on a $100 million budget
  • Taxi (2004); grossed $69 million worldwide on a $25 million budget
  • Barbershop (2002); grossed $70 million worldwide on a $12 million budget

Why then, with his unmeasured accomplishments as an African-American director, is Tim Story not an A-lister?   L.A. Times reports he’s still working at a disadvantage because he’s a black filmmaker at a time when the people who run today’s studios are overwhelmingly white and not especially well-versed or even particularly curious about African American culture.

Hopefully, sooner than later, Tim Story will get the respect he deserves as a director and will become a familiar name along with Tyler Perry, Antoine Fuqua, Spike Lee, John Singleton and F. Gary Gray!

What are your thoughts?

Wendy Williams returning to her first love?

Posted by | Cyrena Rose

Is talk show host Wendy Williams going back to her first love?

Yes, in the future…on her own terms…she will return to radio!

“There are aspects of radio that I do miss, and I would like to go back to radio and I will.”

A few conditions need to be met before she gets in the sound booth again, though.  “When I go back to radio it’s going to be on my own terms,” she asserted.  “I don’t want to play music, I want to talk.”

As of now, her schedule is busy with her syndicated Wendy Williams Show and aspirations to do more acting.  After having a small role in the hit movie, Think Like A Man (Wendy played Gail, the wife of Cedric played by Kevin Hart) she is being pursued for more roles.

“Because of that role, I’ve gotten other scripts,” Wendy said.  “I’m hoping that this summer I will be on a movie set some place doing something.  I want to be comedic.”

Wendy fans needn’t worry, her talk show has been renewed for 2 more seasons (it’s in season 3 now) and although radio is calling her name; she won’t be returning to her first love anytime soon.

Will “Power” Packer talks ‘Think Like A Man’ opening and new project ‘No Good Deed’

Posted by | Cyrena Rose

The Rattler alumni strikes again!  Over the weekend, producer Will ‘Power’ Packer’s film Think Like A Man took the #1 spot; grossing over $33.3 million!  Will’s production company {with co-founder Rob Hardy}, Rainforest Films has churned out successful ‘number one’ films, including:  Stomp the Yard, Takers and Obsessed.

Will recently interviewed with Indiewire’s Shadow and Act about the film’s strong opening and his current project with Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, No Good Deed.  Check out excerpts of Will’s interview:

– What does this weekend’s box office win mean in the grander scheme of things? Why should we be excited about this? What does it mean for you and Rainforest films?

It’s huge. I don’t think the significance of opening with the number 1 movie in America can be overstated. This isn’t the number 1 lower-budgeted film, or the number 1 African American Film, or the number 1 film for a particular audience; It’s the number 1 movie in America, period; and if those numbers hold, then we’re going to be in a great position that shows the power of a smart strategic marketing plan that takes advantage of social media, networking, grassroots and a great campaign; because we were up against films that were significantly larger than us. However, the great equalizer is the level of grassroots, social media, Twitter, Facebook support that we got; and the audience is saying, we want to see more films like this. And I think that when audiences start to realize their power in Hollywood decision making, you will see more films like this made and become more successful.

– And finally, I know that your next project is gearing up in Atlanta, with Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson – both you’re working with again; anything you can share with us on what to expect from the film, and when we can expect to see it in theaters?

I’m actually calling you from the set of that movie right now; and yes, that’s the next one. As a producer, it don’t stop, as they say. I’ve got one film opening this weekend, and now I’m in production on my next one; it’s a cycle, and I’m blessed to be able to be active as a producer. I don’t have a release date yet; I just want to first get through this current release [Think Like A Man], and then get through this new production [No Good Deed], and then I’ll start looking at when’s the best time to release it; but yes, it’s a thriller with Idris and Taraji; it’s a script that I’m really proud of because it’s a film that wasn’t originally conceived with African American leads in mind; and I like the fact that it’s a universal film; but I wanted to put the best talent in front of the camera for this movie, and those 2 people happened to be Idris and Taraji, who happened to be black. This will help us in building as well if, or rather, when it’s successful.

Will Packer is consistently on the move and riding high!  To read the entire interview, go to >> Indiewire.  Also, listen to Will chat-it-up with The Breakfast Club about Think Like A Man’s success!

Steve Harvey talks about movie, new TV gig and locating your love…

Steve Harvey’s schedule is pretty full these days. Between his daily radio program, being a husband to wife Marjorie and the numerous media rounds promoting his new comedy, “Think Like A Man,” Harvey is truly a man on the move.

RayCornelius had the pleasure of speaking briefly with Harvey where he discussed how the book became a movie, what fans can expect from his new talk show and his new dating site, Locate Your Love.

On transitioning the book “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” into a film?

After the book had been out for six weeks, Oprah called me to do her show.  And it had been #1 on NYT for six weeks and then after that, Screen Gems called.  Will Packer called and said, “Hey man, we want to buy the rights to your book and turn it into a movie.”  I said, “Cool, how much?” [laughs] He gave me a price but it didn’t work.  So we kept talking and finally gave me a number that I was like, yeah!

On what fans have to look forward to with the new talk show?

We’re going to have to move to Chicago, that’s for starters.  I’m not going to revolutionize day-time talk but I tell you this, there will be no one else in day-time talk funnier than the show we will produce.

On what advice he would give to young adults looking for love?

Marjorie and I have a philosophy.  We’ve formed a two handed circle.  There are only two people allowed in this circle.  The “in-laws” are not in it.  The media isn’t in it.  The bloggers aren’t in it.  Our kids aren’t it.  And our friends aren’t in it.  And our business isn’t in it. We make all our decisions ourselves.  So when the bloggers are hating and something else is going down, we love each other that much more, because what we have is real and we know that it work; so what do we care what people write.  We’re happy and we want this for everyone.

On his new dating site, Locate Your Love

It’s going to be the hottest dating site in America; in just a little while.  We haven’t really started promoting it but Locate Your Love is going to help a lot of people find love.

“Think Like A Man” opens in theaters this week, April 20!
