Disney is making it possible for everyone to enjoy the wonder of Broadway’s smash musical Hamilton this holiday weekend. A new film version of the Tony Award-winning show is available NOW on the Disney+ platform.
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock … Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, Hamilton has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.
Filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, the dramedy transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way.
Hamilton also features a cast of breakout stars that have gone on to do some amazing TV, film and stage work including Lin Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom Jr. It also features Renee Elise Goldsberry and Okieriete “OAK” Onaodowan, who I had the pleasure of interviewing this week during AAFCA’s Virtual Round Table Series.

My quick review as posted by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA):
“Lin Manuel Miranda truly captures the essence of our nation’s forefathers and delivers their passions and desires in a way that audiences can relate to today. HAMILTON is a much needed bridge between yesterday and today. It’s the perfect marriage of “what’s old is now new again.” Hamilton’s debut on Disney+ is genius and falls in line with the other classics the brand is known for delivering.”
