The film is based on Rebecca Skloot‘s nonfiction book of the same name and also features Rose ByrneRenee Elise Goldsberry, Courtney B. Vance, Leslie Uggams, Rocky Carroll and Reg E. Cathey

Lacks’ sons—David Lacks, Jr. and Zakariyya Rahman, and her granddaughter Jeri Lacks served as consultants to the film alongside Winfrey, who is also the executive producer.
