When I think of my favorite 90s movies, acclaimed actress Lisa Nicole Carson comes to mind. She was the buxom beauty from Brooklyn that sashayed her way into Hollywood. Armed with stunning looks and irresistible charm, Lisa was without a doubt one of the most sought after actresses of the decade and appeared in such iconic films as Jason’s Lyric, Eve’s Bayou, Devil in a Blue Dress and Love Jones. She also starred in such groundbreaking series as ER and Ally McBeal.

But by the beginning of the new millennium she was gone! No films or television appearances. No magazine features or red carpet sightings. She had all but left the acting business with little or no information about her except alleged rumors that she had “gone mad” and was suffering from mental illness including paranoid schizophrenia.

Well, Lisa Nicole Carson is back and setting the record straight about what really  happened to her in an exclusive interview with ESSENCE. In the story, Lisa opens up about her battle with bipolar disorder and why she abruptly left her acting career on the cutting room floor.

“I was in New York City catching up with loved ones when I unexpectedly had a fit in my hotel—yelling, throwing things, crying and raising enough hell that the staff called an ambulance. I ended up being hospitalized for a few weeks, and a psychiatrist gave a diagnosis: bipolar disorder. I was stunned and clueless, and so was my family. I didn’t want to believe I had any mental health issues and went into denial.”
