Netflix has released a FIRST LOOK clip from the upcoming documentary about jazz icon, Nina Simone, titled “What Happened, Miss Simone?” As previously reported, the film comes from Academy Award® nominated director/producer, Liz Garbus and features never-before-heard recordings and rare archival footage together with Nina’s most memorable songs. Recorded over the course of 3 decades, Nina tells her life story to various interviewers and would-be biographers. The film premiered this weekend (January 23) during the Sundance Film Festival and will air later on this year.
“It is a film about the amazing life and music of Nina Simone. Nina Simone was a musical genius who never fully got her due, with a little-understood path to fame and a personal life strained by the exigencies of extraordinary times and her own nascent mental illness. But the film is a celebration of her genius and tenacity, without apology. It is structured as a musical; every song is intrinsically intertwined with the narrative,” says Garbus.
Check out the clip below which features Simone in her own words as well as a performance of her classic tune, “Backlash Blues.”
