Happy Birthday Miss Nina Simone!

Simone was the ‘voice’ of the Civil Rights Movement and taught us “To Be Young, Gifted and Black.”

Born Eunice Waymon in 1933, Simone was an American singer, songwriter, and classically-trained pianist. Although is regarded as a jazz singer, her music is also associated with blues, folk, gospel and pop.

Her legacy can be seen in such contemporary artists like India.Arie and Erykah Badu. MTV is planning to release a biopic later on this year with Mary J. Blidge as the lead.

Simone was affectionately known as the ‘High Priestess of Soul’ and died April 21, 2003 at the age of 70.
