Grammy-nominated rapper Common just picked up another acting gig as Civil Rights activist James Bevel in Ava DuVernay’s MLK drama, Selma.
Bevel was the Director of Direct Action and the Nonviolent Education of The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He is also credited for initially organizing the 1963 March on Washington and 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. He died in 2008 at the age of 72. [Wikipedia]
Common joins an all-star cast including David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, Ledisi as Mahalia Jackson and Andre Holland as Andrew Young.
As previously reported, Selma chronicles the march African-Americans made from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 in order to gain voting rights. The film is being produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Oprah Winfrey along with Bradford Young serving as the film’s Director of Photographer.
Kudos to Common and the rest of the cast!
