Congratulations are in order for MC Lyte!
The female hip-hop pioneer will receive the “I AM HIP HOP” Award at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards which is slated to film on Sept. 28 at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. The news was announced on Friday making her the eighth recipient to receive the coveted lifetime achievement award presented by Sprite.
Lyte will be honored for ground-breaking work as the one of the first female rappers in the game. According to VIBE, she is the first female rapper to release a solo LP and the first to receive a gold single for her anthem, “Ruffneck.” She is also the first female rapper nominated for a Grammy and the first to preside as president of the L.A. Chapter of the Recording Academy.
Lyte’s philanthropic efforts will also be recognized including the work she has done through her Hip-Hop Sisters Network. The non-profit organization provides scholarships to eligible four-year college students and serves as a platform for female MC’s to showcase their talent.
As previously reported Lyte will also executive produce a new show for BET entitled Hip-Hop Sisters. The reality series will feature Lyte alongside female rappers Lady of Rage, Yo Yo, Monie Love and Lil Mama.
