Stars Celebrate Missy Elliott’s Michael Jackson Vanguard Award [VIDEO + PHOTOS]

Superstar recipient of this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Missy Elliott, may have set the VMA’s and social media on fire with her show-stopping performance this week, but the post-show celebration in her honor was nothing short of spectacular.

Queen Latifah + Pepa + Missy + Cardi B

Elliott’s long-time manager, Mona Scott-Young, along with nightlife entrepreneur Unik Ernest curated the star-studded event which hosted an impressive list of guests: Queen Latifah, Cardi B, Lizzo, Lil’ Kim, Oscar winner Regina King, tennis star Novak Djokovic, Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima, Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger (world champion US Women’s soccer team), Ice-T and Coco, Blac Chyna, Lil’ Mama, Dave East, Victor Cruz, Naturi Naughton, Winnie Harlow and Myx Fusions CEO Peter Reaske were among the elite who came out to celebrate with Elliott. Celebrity DJ Mary Mac 5 Star kept the energy high as guests partied into the wee hours.

Ice-T + Coco + Mona Scott-Young

“We wanted to celebrate Missy, and honor her success and contributions to the culture, so where better to do that than a place inspired by her genius and creativity,” says Scott-Young. “Words can’t express how proud I am of Missy. She is an icon and truly deserves to be celebrated.”

The Museum of Missy Elliott

The event was held at “The Museum of Missy Elliott,” an interactive pop-up playground that allowed guests to engage in the most memorable and iconic moments from Elliott’s music videos. The concept boasted a live hologram experience where guests could record a gif of themselves performing to Elliott’s hit classic “The Rain,” while virtually wearing her signature inflated trash bag. The immersive activation was powered by VNTANA.

Special thanks to Marilyn Van Alstyne of EMVE Management Group and event supporters Pepsi, MTV VMA’s, Myx Fusions, Bartenura, Cîroc, Courvoisier, Quay, Picsart and Monami Entertainment.

Elliott’s latest project, Iconology, is available now on all streaming platforms.

Lil’ Mama opens up about embracing her femininity + being inspired by Diana Ross [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

If you’ve been on social media lately, you may have noticed that Niatia Jessica Kirkland aka Lil’ Mama has totally changed her look and image. The once “rough around the edges-little sister type” has now morphed into a full-grown beauty with no plans on going back!

I caught up with the hip-pop star and emerging actress during June’s ESSENCE Music Festival where she talked candidly about finally embracing her femininity. She also opened up about being inspired by music legend DIANA ROSS. From her iconic “wind-blown” hair to her legendary film career, Niatia has found her new muse for the moment.

“I love Diana Ross. I am inspired by Diana Ross. I feel like Diana is from the projects of Detroit, Michigan but you would never get that from her image. You would never look at Diana Ross and think, ‘project girl,’ said Niatia during our exclusive interview.

“I had a tough beginning in this industry because I was so young and I was straight from the streets. I didn’t have the media training to create a persona for myself. I was so wild and tomboyish that eventually I felt like I found my way to my femininity. It’s always been a part of me and always been inside of me but I felt like my circumstances and being ‘from the hood’ made me afraid to be soft and beautiful. So Diana is also not just an inspiration to my fashion and the way I carry myself now but also for being such an amazing talent as a singer and as an actor.”

Niatia received rave reviews as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in VH1’s hugely successful 2013 biopic “Crazy, Sexy, Cool.” Her newest role as an exotic dancer turned murder—Falicia Blakely—in “When Love Kills” will no doubt also catch the attention of industry heads. For the twenty-something-year-old starlet, Ross’ career now serves as a blue print for where she wants to go next.

“It’s kind of prophetic! In 2009, I was in Texas at an All-Star Basketball Game after party and Chris Tucker came in and looked me in my face and said, ‘study Diana Ross.’ Like where did that come from? That had to be like God speaking through him. I’d never studied Diana or even looked at her until I started acting. I was like, ‘WOW!’ I’m kind of like parrallel to her in a new time,” said Niatia.

Check out her recent photos below where she channels Ross for a premiere of “When Love Kills.” Niatia looks “fabulous and fierce” with Ross’ signature big hair and a flowy white ensemble designed by Michael Costello:

“When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story” airs tonight at 9 p.m. on TV One.

#UPFRONT attends ESSENCE Festival + Radio Row + Premieres + More

Written by | Ray Cornelius

It gives me great pleasure to share my amazing coverage of the 2017 ESSENCE Festival. My arts and entertainment radio magazine—UPFRONT—was there to capture all of the sights and sounds of this year’s festivities as part of Radio Row.  My four-day weekend began on Thursday (June 29) with a special meet & greet + reception with the cast of the indie film, “STEP.”

“STEP” is the true-life story of a girls’ high-school step dance team in Baltimore, whose teachers, counselors, coaches and families, help them achieve their dreams of going off to college. It also takes viewers into the personal lives of three of the dancers— Blessin Giraldo, Cori Grainger, Tayla Solomon—and their coach, Gari McIntyre.  The film has received rave reviews and was the winner of the Documentary Special Jury Award for Inspirational Filmmaking at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

On Friday (June 30) #UPFRONT began its three day stint on Radio Row. It is one of three areas that celebrity attendees can meet press and conduct interviews. I was truly blessed to have interviewed so many people including cast members from the hugely popular “Orange Is The New Black,” TNT’s new breakout series, “Claws,”  FOX’s “Empire and Star.” I also got a chance to chat with the cast of FX’s “Snowfall” and the new series “The Mayor” and “Ghosted.”

Music divas CeCe Winans, Anita Wilson and Chanté Moore stopped by the table to discuss their new projects. Winans album, Let Them Fall In Love has been killing the gospel charts and is her best work to date. Wilson talked about covering the classic jazz tune “Here’s To Life” for her new album and Moore dished about her album, Rise of the Pheonix and recording her first Christmas CD this fall.

#UPFRONT also chatted with actress and singer Lil Mama (who is going by her real name Niatia) as well as celebrity stylists Mushiya Tshikuka, Razor Chic of Atlanta and Melvin Styles. However, the highlight of Radio Row was talking to New Thought Leader, Life Coach and TV Personality—Iyanla Vanzant. She opened up about her last season + why she continues to participate in the ESSENCE Festival. She also talked about what she has learned personally from doing her award winning show, “Iyanla Fix My Life.”

“What I’ve learned personally is how powerful God is. As Black people were taught, ‘don’t tell your business in the street.’ (LOL) But when there’s a call on someone’s life to serve God, these people are showing up in amazing ways. I’ve also learned how difficult a healing journey can be. People don’t want to suffer. They don’t want to hurt. They don’t want to destroy themselves. But if they don’t have the tools and the information to heal, that’s what they do. I’ve also learned that I don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time. I’m human. I can have my time off…my days off and I don’t have to be who people expect me to be.”

In addition to Radio Row, #UPFRONT was able to attend and capture images from the night time concerts. This year’s ESSENCE Festival theme was all about female empowerment, sisterhood and “staying woke” and the entertainers who performed were true reflections of that. Friday’s show included Rhonda Ross, India.Arie, John Legend and the Queen of Motown—DIANA ROSS.

This was Miss Ross’ first time appearing at the Festival since its inception in 1995 and she didn’t disappoint. Other performances included Jazmine Sullivan, Jill Scott, Chaka Khan, Solange, Monica, Lalah Hathaway, Remy Ma, Xscape, Master P, Chance the Rapper and Mary J. Blige.

Other highlights throughout the weekend included the NOLA premieres of “Girls Trip” featuring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish. FX also screened its new drama, “Snowfall” which included appearances by the show’s cast + the creator and award winning director John Singleton. #UPFRONT also captured images of the casts from “Detroit,” OWN’s “Greenleaf” and “Queen Sugar” + Ava DuVernay and the “WOKE Women Awards.”

UPDATE: ‘When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story’ to air Labor Day

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

TV One’s original movie, “When Love Kills : The Falicia Blakely Story” is set to air on Labor Day. The network announced the big news during their recent 2017 Upfront Presentation.

Originally titled, “Hit a Lick,” “When Love Kills” is inspired by an episode of TV One’s original series “For My Man,” and tell the tragic story of Falicia Blakely (Lil Mama), a teen mom who grows up in the fast-lane. When she becomes an exotic dancer, she attracts the attention of local pimp and predator, Dino (Lance Gross). His empty promises of a life together turn Falicia into a pawn in his dangerous games; and she’s forced to prove her love for him at the expense of innocent lives. “When Love Kills” also stars Tami Roman, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Big Freedia, Tiffany Black and Lil Zane.

As previously reported, “When Love Kills” marks the directing debut of acclaimed actress Tasha Smith and was written and executive produced by Cas Sigers-Beedles, who previously wrote and executive produced the TV One movies “Welcome to the Family” and “Girlfriends Getaway 1 & 2.”

“I have so much compassion for this girl,” said Smith to RC in November 2016.  “To be able to work with a talent such as Lil Mama and help bring this story to life in a way that is full of compassion and passion without any judgement is a blessing.”

Stay tuned…

RC goes BTS of TV One’s ‘Hit A Lick’ starring Lil Mama, Lance Gross & Directed by Tasha Smith [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

I had the extreme pleasure Friday night of getting a behind-the-scenes look at TV One’s upcoming made for television movie, “Hit A Lick.” The project is the network’s first original film inspired by their popular crime series “For My Man” and is also the directorial debut for “Empire” actress Tasha Smith.

Lil Mama

“Hit A Lick” tells the tragic story of Falicia Blakely, a teen mom who grows up in the fast-lane. When she becomes an exotic dancer, she attracts the attention of local pimp and predator, Dino. His empty promises of a life together turn Falicia into a pawn in his dangerous games; and she’s forced to prove her love for him at the expense of innocent lives.

Lance Gross

“Hit A Lick” features celebrated hip hop star and actress Lil Mama as Falicia, “Temptation” star Lance Gross as Dino, “Basketball Wives” starlet Tami Roman as Falicia’s alcoholic mother, Floyd Mayweather Jr. as Punch, a loud and cocky club owner from Miami, Tiffany Black as Falicia’s “road dog” and stripper friend, Pumpkin, Walter Fauntleroy as “Q” Falicia’s regular customer-turned-friend, Big Freedia as “Tam” neighborhood friend and confidante to Falicia’s mother and Lil Zane as DJ Pierre. The film is being shot exclusively in Atlanta, GA and is set in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Keith Neal, Tasha Smith and Cas Siger-Beedles

The “Hit A Lick” screenplay is executive produced and written by industry veteran and my buddy, Cas Siger-Beedles, who previously wrote and executive produced for TV One’s “Welcome to the Family” and “Girlfriends Getaway 1&2.” It is also produced for TV One by Eric Tomosunas, Keith Neal and James Sepplefrick of Swirl Films.

During the Q&A portion of the evening, Smith revealed that she was drawn to Falicia’s story because of her own history as an exotic dancer. She also said that she is directing the film in a “compassionate and non-judgemental way” that Falicia’s situation may serve as a lesson for the film’s female viewers.

Tasha Smith discussing why she was attracted to this story

“I have so much compassion for this girl. To be able to work with a talent such as Lil Mama and help bring this story to life in a way that is full of compassion and passion without any judgement is a blessing.  Some people think that for a young girl to end up doing this was stupid and they want to judge her instead of really understanding her position. But we’re telling her story in a way that may help other young girls.  I also have deep, deep love for Falicia and I hope that she’s proud of the way we told her story,” said Smith to Atlanta press.

Stay tuned for more exclusive content featuring Smith and the cast of “Hit A Lick” as well as the screenwriter Cas Siger-Beedles on a future episode of my radio show, “UPFRONT” Inside Atlanta’s Entertainment Industry.  In the meantime, check out more photos below from last night’s media event:

TLC’s T-Boz and Chilli stopped by The Wendy William’s Show  on Thursday promoting their new VH1 biopic Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story.  The two ladies, who still hold the record as the most successful girl group of all time, sat down with Wendy to discuss the movie’s soundtrack, 20, their role in casting the film and helping to write the script. T-Boz also took time out to clear the air about the alleged drama between the group and its former manager and R&B singer, Peebles.

“We have no problem with Peebles at all. We did not slander her. This movie is from our perspective of what happened to us. We did not lie and yes, we did not tell everything that could have been told. We kept it clean,” explains T-Boz.

TLC was later joined by the film’s stars, Keke Palmer, Drew Sidora and Lil Mama. Each actress talked about their experience playing the iconic music stars and their eerily personal connection to each singer. Check out the video below as well as photos from their recent NYC premiere and the new super trailer:

RC dishes with MC Lyte about new reality show, today’s hip hop and being an Icon…

eWritten by | Ray Cornelius

Legendary female rapper MC Lyte was in the “A” this week promoting her new venture, Café Mocha Radio. The nationally syndicated show is hosted by Lyte along with Angelique Perrin and comedian and The Real  host Loni Love. According to the website, Café Mocha Radio features the ladies giving their  ‘two cents’ on today’s top issues as well as social commentary. Of course, there will also be celebrity interviews, inspirational self-help advice and the best in urban contemporary music.

In addition to her radio program, Lyte was also in town promoted her new reality series on BET entitled Hip Hop Sisters. As previously reported, the show follows Lyte along with Yo, Yo, Lady of Rage, MC Smooth, Monie Love and her protégé Lil Mama as they attempt to re-launch their careers.

cafemocha“The show is about our lives to a certain degree. It’s also about getting on the road while  working on a new project as well as seeing if there are any new female MCs to be found,” said Lyte. “In the midst of that is all of this life that is happening to each and every individual and it’s a lot. We start taping this weekend in New Orleans, so it’s going to be quite an event.”

Lyte is also receiving this year’s I Am Hip Hop Award during tonight’s taping of the BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta’s Boisfeuillet Jones Civic Center. She will be honored for ground-breaking work as a pioneering female rapper and has no problem being labeled hip-hop.

“The award is called I AM Hip Hop and that I am! (LOL) I have no problem owning up to that. I guess in years to come had I not received it now, I would have wondered, “What is going on because I am hip-hop.”

When asked how she has maintained her individuality over the years she replied, “Outside and inside I’m just me. I came into the business at an early age and in a space where record labels were appreciative of that and they just let us be who we were. And that’s why were so distinctly different from one another,” said the Grammy-winning artist known for her anthem, “Ruff Neck.”

“Today’s record labels are looking for a cookie cutter scenario like, ‘Oh that sounds good, you gotta do something that’s going to work like that inside this mix.’ You then end up having a lot of songs that sound alike. But there are some female MCs out there that seem to pierce through all of that. I also think there are a lot of original MCs out there that are not being given the time of day to show their skills to the masses.”

The BET Hip Hop Awards will air on October 15 at 8 p.m. and is hosted by Uncle Snoop.

Congratulations are in order for MC Lyte!

The female hip-hop pioneer will receive the “I AM HIP HOP” Award at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards which is slated to film on Sept. 28 at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. Lil Mama performs with TLC and joins group for Greatest Hits Album (VIDEO)

T-Boz and Chilli performing during Vh1 Mixtape Festival

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

As if playing the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the upcoming biopic was not enough for Lil Mama, the 23-year-old performed with Chilli and T-Boz during last night’s Vh1 Mixtape Festival. She will also appear on the iconic group’s forthcoming greatest hits album. Apparently, the ladies were very impressed with the rapper’s performance as Left Eye that having her on board for both projects seemed like a natural fit.

“For 10 years we have been mourning the death of our sister Lisa, and although we have discussed the option of bringing in someone to perform with us, it never felt right at the time,” stated Chilli. “Watching Lil Mama on the set of our movie CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story reminded us of Lisa’s spirit, and, for the first time since her passing, we felt everything come together in an organic way.”

T-Boz later added, “Lil Mama’s authentic style, although very different from Lisa’s, got our creative juices flowing. By bringing her in, we will continue to keep TLC’s music alive for a new generation of fans. We are thrilled to be writing this new chapter in The TLC story.”

Reportedly, the ladies performed a medley of their mega hits including “Fanmail,” “Hat 2 Da Back,” and “Ain’t too Proud To Beg,” before introducing Lil Mama on stage for “No Scrubs.”

Check out the performance below:

[youtube id=”ZnIF72mW1vs” width=”600″ height=”350″]

Look for Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story  to premiere on Vh1 in October along with a TLC Greatest Hits album debuting the same month on the 15th.

What are your thoughts about Lil Mama temporarily joining TLC?

‘Hip-Hop Sisters’ and more are coming to BET…

Female rap icon MC Lyte is starring in the new reality-series, Hip-Hop Sisters

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Last weekend when I attended the Atlanta preview of Being Mary Jane, the series’ creator, writer and producer, Mara Brock Akil indicated that BET was re-branding itself through new programming and original series.  So it’s no surprise to us that the network has green lit four new unscripted pilots including one from Mara and her directing husband, Salim Akil.

Here is a brief synopsis of each show below:

“Hip-Hop Sisters” is an unscripted program that features six female rappers: MC Lyte, Yo Yo, Lady of Rage, Smooth, Monie Love and Lil Mama, as they attempt to re-launch their careers.

Kirk Franklin“Gone Gospel” is hosted by Sunday Best’s Kirk Franklin (left). The multi-Grammy-winner oversees a group of singers who are sent through a “Gospel Boot Camp” to help revive their careers.

“Internal Affairs” takes a look at true crime stories that focus on cops investigating their own.

“Back to Me with Jeanette Jenkins”  is being described as a makeover show centered on Hollywood trainer and fitness expert, Jeanette Jenkins. She is responsible for the rock hard bodies of such A-list clients as Serena Williams, Kimora Lee Simmons and Kelly Rowland. This project is being produced by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.

Also look for BET to premiere an original program based on Clement Virgo’s adaptation of Lawrence Hill’s award-winning bestseller, The Book of Negros.  According to Indie Wire, BET owns USA broadcast rights to a miniseries that will most likely air in 2014.

Kudos to BET and looking forward to the new programming!

What are your thoughts about BET upcoming programs? Will you be watching?
