One thing you don’t want to do is piss off the First Lady of the United States!

Ellen Sturtz learned that the hard way when she attempted to disrupt First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech during last night’s Democratic National Committee fundraiser.  According to THP, Obama was about 12 minutes into her 20-minute speech when Sturtz, a divorced pro LGBT protester, interrupted her. FLOTUS reportedly left the podium and walked over to the protester and said, “listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.” Another woman sitting near Sturtz shouted, “You need to go!’

Sturtz was then escorted out of the fundraiser yelling, “federal equality before I die.” Apparently, she is part of GetEQUAL, an organization of activists demanding an executive order to stop federal contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The group has been disappointed that President Obama has refused to issue such an order, while the Employment Non-Discrimination Act—which would prohibit such discrimination in hiring more broadly—remains stuck in Congress.

Sturtz later said that she did not go the $1000 a plate fundraiser to disrespect the First Lady and was quite disappointed in Mrs. Obama’s response.  “Basically, I was asked by the first lady to be quiet, and I can’t be quiet any longer. … I was surprised by how negative the crowd seemed to be. It was actually a little unsettling and disturbing.”

What are your thoughts? Do you think FLOTUS handle this situation correctly?
