Xscap3 talks new music, biopic and more with RC [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

I had the pleasure of attending a private listening session Wednesday afternoon with the ladies of Xscap3Tameka “Tiny” Harris, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott. The trio’s new moniker is being compared to what New Edition members Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins did as Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD). The ladies are also very excited about their new tour dates for 2018 minus Kandi Burruss, who is currently starring on Broadway as Matron “Mama” Morton in “Chicago.” The ladies did hint that the RHOA star may be joining them for their July gig at the ESSENCE Festival.

The music comes from their EP that features such newly released tracks as  “Dreamkilla,” and “Wifed Up.” It also includes the feel good tune “Memory Lane” and “Cravin,” plus the club banger “Here For It” and the female anthem (you heard it here first) “The Last of Me.” The project was produced by Tricky Stewart. According to Tasha, the listening session was being used to help them determine which songs to release.

“This is important for us so that we can kinda figure out what we want to do as far as our music is concerned. Being able to keep a core audience but also being versatile is a blessing. All of the information we get from you guys [media] helps us to put things into perspective and we appreciate it.”

In addition to the music, the ladies also revealed the actresses who will portray them in an upcoming biopic about their rise to stardom with So So Def and Jermaine Dupri. Tamika will be played by her daughter, O’Shun Reney Byas, Tiny will be played by her daughter, Zonnique Pullins, Tasha will be played by “Power” actress Naturi Naughton and Kandi has expressed that she would like Ryan Destiny of Lee Daniels‘ “STAR” to portray her.  The ladies also mentioned that they have patched things up with Dupri and will be working with him on another project in the near future.

Xscap3’s new EP drops on March 2. See more photos below:

Xscape releases two new songs + hires Vincent Herbert as manager

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Atlanta’s own Xscape kicked off this weekend by releasing two new singles, “Wifed Up” and “Dream Killa.” The group, which is now a trio (LaTocha Scott, Tameka “Tiny” Harris and Tamika Scott), have also hired Vincent Herbert to manage them.

According to HipHollywood, Herbert will oversee the group’s music while Mona Scott-Young will continue to manage their reality show, TV and film projects like the upcoming Bravo biopic.

“We sat down with him, had some food and just talked, like how most business takes place, he just got our vision and he saw the potential in us,” explained Tamika.  “We love what he did with Tamar and Lady Gaga and we also knew he understood the business,” added Tiny. “We’re really excited.”

Herbert is known for discovering Lady Gaga and managing his (estranged) wife Tamar Braxton. He also just recently signed Remy Ma to his roster.

#UPFRONT attends ESSENCE Festival + Radio Row + Premieres + More

Written by | Ray Cornelius

It gives me great pleasure to share my amazing coverage of the 2017 ESSENCE Festival. My arts and entertainment radio magazine—UPFRONT—was there to capture all of the sights and sounds of this year’s festivities as part of Radio Row.  My four-day weekend began on Thursday (June 29) with a special meet & greet + reception with the cast of the indie film, “STEP.”

“STEP” is the true-life story of a girls’ high-school step dance team in Baltimore, whose teachers, counselors, coaches and families, help them achieve their dreams of going off to college. It also takes viewers into the personal lives of three of the dancers— Blessin Giraldo, Cori Grainger, Tayla Solomon—and their coach, Gari McIntyre.  The film has received rave reviews and was the winner of the Documentary Special Jury Award for Inspirational Filmmaking at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

On Friday (June 30) #UPFRONT began its three day stint on Radio Row. It is one of three areas that celebrity attendees can meet press and conduct interviews. I was truly blessed to have interviewed so many people including cast members from the hugely popular “Orange Is The New Black,” TNT’s new breakout series, “Claws,”  FOX’s “Empire and Star.” I also got a chance to chat with the cast of FX’s “Snowfall” and the new series “The Mayor” and “Ghosted.”

Music divas CeCe Winans, Anita Wilson and Chanté Moore stopped by the table to discuss their new projects. Winans album, Let Them Fall In Love has been killing the gospel charts and is her best work to date. Wilson talked about covering the classic jazz tune “Here’s To Life” for her new album and Moore dished about her album, Rise of the Pheonix and recording her first Christmas CD this fall.

#UPFRONT also chatted with actress and singer Lil Mama (who is going by her real name Niatia) as well as celebrity stylists Mushiya Tshikuka, Razor Chic of Atlanta and Melvin Styles. However, the highlight of Radio Row was talking to New Thought Leader, Life Coach and TV Personality—Iyanla Vanzant. She opened up about her last season + why she continues to participate in the ESSENCE Festival. She also talked about what she has learned personally from doing her award winning show, “Iyanla Fix My Life.”

“What I’ve learned personally is how powerful God is. As Black people were taught, ‘don’t tell your business in the street.’ (LOL) But when there’s a call on someone’s life to serve God, these people are showing up in amazing ways. I’ve also learned how difficult a healing journey can be. People don’t want to suffer. They don’t want to hurt. They don’t want to destroy themselves. But if they don’t have the tools and the information to heal, that’s what they do. I’ve also learned that I don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time. I’m human. I can have my time off…my days off and I don’t have to be who people expect me to be.”

In addition to Radio Row, #UPFRONT was able to attend and capture images from the night time concerts. This year’s ESSENCE Festival theme was all about female empowerment, sisterhood and “staying woke” and the entertainers who performed were true reflections of that. Friday’s show included Rhonda Ross, India.Arie, John Legend and the Queen of Motown—DIANA ROSS.

This was Miss Ross’ first time appearing at the Festival since its inception in 1995 and she didn’t disappoint. Other performances included Jazmine Sullivan, Jill Scott, Chaka Khan, Solange, Monica, Lalah Hathaway, Remy Ma, Xscape, Master P, Chance the Rapper and Mary J. Blige.

Other highlights throughout the weekend included the NOLA premieres of “Girls Trip” featuring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish. FX also screened its new drama, “Snowfall” which included appearances by the show’s cast + the creator and award winning director John Singleton. #UPFRONT also captured images of the casts from “Detroit,” OWN’s “Greenleaf” and “Queen Sugar” + Ava DuVernay and the “WOKE Women Awards.”

XSCAPE to perform at this year’s ‘ESSENCE FESTIVAL’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

ESSENCE announced today that platinum-selling girl group XSCAPE will be performing at this year’s ESSENCE Festival. This will be their first full performance together in over 15 years and social media has been buzzing all day with excitement.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the return of XSCAPE than in New Orleans with our fans at the world famous, Essence Festival,” the group said in a statement. “Essence Fest is so much more than a music festival, it’s a celebration of culture, music and entertainment. We are excited and honored to be included in an incredible lineup of artists and performers, including the living legend, Diana Ross!”

XSCAPE—Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott—enjoyed global success in the 90s with such hits as “Just Kickin It,” “Understanding,” “My Little Secret,” and “Who Can I Run To.” They were signed to Jermaine Dupri‘s SoSo Def label and helped define the sound of that decade.

Since their reunion earlier this year, the group has teamed up with reality TV guru Mona Scott-Young with plans for a major comeback. TV One is also producing “Who Can I Run To: The Xscape Story,” as part of its new original movies. The film is  inspired by the quartet’s episode of “Unsung,” which was the most popular episode aired in the series’ history. The film is being produced in partnership with Dupri.

Check out one of my favs by them “In the Rain” that was featured on the iconic “Love Jones” soundtrack and click here for your ESSENCE Festival tickets. See you there!

R&B Girl Group Glamour: ‘We Have a Sisterhood’ (VIDEO)

Written by | Ray Cornelius

While some girls are out there “chasing destiny,” Atlanta-based trio Glamour are actually living it. The R&B group from Kandi Burruss’ Kandi Koated Entertainment are turning heads and creating quite a name for themselves with hot renditions of Beyoncé’s “Formation” and “Dangerously In Love” as well as Rihanna’s club banger “Work.” Their YouTube videos not only display their amazing vocal talent and slick dance moves but the girls are gaining a global fanbase. They’ve even caught the attention of music veteran Brandy, who invited them out to the video shoot of her new single “Beggin and Pleadin,” after seeing their rendition on YouTube.

Birthed out of Natasha Garcia’s AGI Performing Arts School, Glamour—-Moriah, Lady and Kaylan—-have all been training for this moment in the spotlight for quite some time now. And while the girls enjoy emulating groups of the past like Destiny’s Child and TLC, they are bound and determined not to succumb to the pressures and pitfalls of their idols. For Glamour, their connection goes beyond their harmonious “oohs and ahhs,” they have a sisterhood that is not to be challenged.

IMG_5794“We’ve been working together for a long time and we have great chemistry. I mean, we’re sisters and we love what we do and can’t wait to take over the world,” says Lady. I really love it when people leave negative comments on our videos because I’m like, ‘were gonna prove you wrong’ and the fact that you are hating on us proves that we’re doing something right!”

Girl groups have always been known for their melodies as well as their inner turmoil. From The Supremes to En Vogue to Xscape, each one has had its fair share of dramatic breakups and reunions. However, the girls of Glamour are confident in their sisterly bond and have a mutual understanding that no one member is bigger than the group.

“You know this industry, especially in a girl group, is going to try and tear you apart and pull each member in different directions. So, you really just have to know what your purpose is in the group and understand that no one is bigger than the group. You also have to know what you’re lane is and what you here for “your purpose” and be really confident in yourself and don’t let anyone tell you different,” says Kaylan.

Check out Glamour and Brandy on the set of “Beggin and Pleadin” below:

Kandi Burruss introduces her new music groups #Loud & #Glamour [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Multi-Grammy winning singer-songwriter, Kandi Burruss is going back to her musical roots by producing two new acts that are sure to have everyone talking. The RHOA star officially introduced them Thursday night to a select group of Atlanta influencers (including yours truly) during a private dinner and open house at her Atlanta-based entertainment compound, The Kandi Factory.

Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker aka The Tuckers

Burruss, who is an original member of the 90’s girl group, Xscape, says she wants to bring back that “era” with the singing trio, Glamour as well as add some kick to the industry with her multi-cultural quartet LOUD (think The Black Eye Peas). The beloved reality star, who has built an entertainment conglomerate over the last few years, felt that she had neglected her passion for music and was inspired to get back in the game after attending last year’s ASCAP Dinner honoring L.A. Reid. It was during that event and being around so many industry peers like Big Boi, Usher and Babyface, that prompted her to get back in the studio.

Kandi was first introduced to the teenage singers through one of her producers, Brandin Jay, who discovered them through Natarsha Garcia‘s AGI Entertainment. The Atlanta-based company is known for grooming young talent through its Extreme Performing Arts Camp. Burruss says she immediately signed them after seeing a few performances. LOUD consist of Timothee Alex, Katimarie, Kiersten and Turner. Glamour includes Moriah, Kaylan and Lady and are described as “TLC meets The Spice Girls.” The group has also appeared on XFactor and was described by American Idol winner, Fantasia as “amazing SANGERS!”

In addition to the meet and greet, we also had an opportunity to see the group’s perform and talk candidly to Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker about their other new ventures. The couple, affectionately known simply as The Tuckers, revealed they are working on another reality special with Bravo and are opening an Atlanta-based restaurant in the city’s Castleberry Hill District. Burruss described it as high-end Southern Cuisine and says the menu is based on her family’s recipes.

She also revealed that she is an executive producer on Demetria McKinney‘s forthcoming album and would love to collaborate with Rihanna and Adele. The couple also announced that they were working on a movie, a scripted series and are also looking to produce more plays.  Look for Kandi’s new groups, LOUD and Glamour to make guest appearances on this season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
