Macy Gray plays ‘Contemporary Stage’ of Atlanta Jazz Festival [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Check out images of Grammy winning singer-songwriter, actress and record producer MACY GRAY from Saturday night’s Atlanta Jazz Festival. The raspy-voiced vocalist, whose rose to fame in the early 2000s, performed about a 90-minute set of her hits before a packed crowd of hundreds on the western lawn of historic Piedmont Park. The show was emceed by WCLK 91.9’s  “Morning Jazz” radio personality and author—Morris Baxter.

Gray was just one of four acts who graced yesterday’s Contemporary Jazz Stage. Other featured performers included Moonchild, Nik West (who apparently got engaged on during her show), and Nicholas Payton Afro-Caribbean Mixtape. The Contemporary Stage features singers—emerging and established—who have successfully mix jazz with R&B, soul and blues.

Atlanta notables spotted in the crowd included drummer extraordinaire Lil’ John Roberts and Funk Jazz Kafe creator and filmmaker Jason Orr.

Can’t wait to get back out there today to capture performances from Kathleen Bertrand (Legends Stage), Cleveland P. Jones (Contemporary Stage) and Brenda Nicole Moorer (Next Generation Stage).

Check out more images of Gray below along with shots of my WCLK family:

New Music: Macy Gray – ‘Talking Book’ (love letter to Stevie Wonder)

Posted by | Cyrena Rose

Just months after the release of her Covered album, soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress Macy Gray delivers a new album entitled Talking Book!

Known for her distinctive raspy voice and singing style, Macy Gray’s “Talking Book,” which is billed as a “love letter” to Stevie Wonder’s 1972 classic album of the same name on the occasion of its fortieth birthday is scheduled for release tomorrow, October 30th.

Recently, Macy was interviewed by Mike Rogogna and when asked what gave her the idea to revisit Stevie Wonder’s album she simply advised…

He’s one of my favorites, and that’s got to be one of my favorite Stevie Wonder albums ever.  My producer Hal Willner, we were in Poland, of all places, doing a festival and we were talking about Nina Simone songs that he thought I should do and then he goes, “You know what no one’s ever done before? No one’s ever remade an album. You should remake an album.” He wanted me to do this Nina Simone album, but redoing hers was one of those things that should be left alone. It got me on the track of remaking an album and Talking Book was the first one that I thought of because I just know it inside and out and I know what year it was made, I know what studio he was at, I know how many tracks are on it. I just knew I could interpret that.

Macy Gray returns with “Covered” album…

Macy Gray released a brand new album this week entitled, “Covered.”  The project is a selection of handpicked indie rock tunes including Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up,” My Chemical Romance’s “Teenagers,” Eurythmics’s “Here Comes The Rain Again,” and Kayne West’s “Love Lockdown” over Nina Simone’s “Buck.”  She also has appearances on the album by Nicole Scherzinger, MC Lyte and actor and part-time DJ Idris Elba.

Gray credits a YouTube video of Nina Simone’s version of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” as inspiration for the album.  The singer-actress recently spoke to NationalPost.com about “Covered” which is being release on 429 Records.

Gray on why she decided to release a cover album…

“Everybody thought it was a bad idea. Covers have a stigma attached to them; they don’t do very well, they’re for really, really old people, but I was watching YouTube and saw Nina Simone singing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and just thought: I have to do something like that.”

Gray on song selections…

“Some songs you have to leave alone. We tried some Fiona Apple, we tried the Black Keys, that’s my favorite band. We tried King of Leon, we tried Prince, but some stuff…you can’t make it better. Other stuff didn’t go with my voice.”
