Previews for Fantasia’s new Broadway musical, After Midnight begin today and RC has a FIRST LOOK at the Lose to Win singer performing. As previously reported, After Midnight is a new jazz revue that pays tribute to the music of Duke Ellington during his years at the famous Cotton Club in New York City. The heart-pounding, sexy spectacle of a show is set against a narrative of Langston Hughes’ poetry featuring over 25 singers and dancers.
Fantasia leads the ensemble cast which also includes Dule Hill as the host along with Broadway vets Adriane Lenox and Karine Plantadit and an orchestra of 17 world class musicians hand-picked by musical director, Wynton Marsalis. Fantasia performs such classic standards as “Stormy Weather” which was first sung by Ethel Waters at the Cotton Club but made famous by Lena Horne.
“It feels good, but scary at the same time,” said the singer to Broadway.com. “I’m a very emotional person, so I tend to embody these roles and carry them with me. If you listen to the lyrics, these women were in a lot of pain, there were dark moments in their lives.”
Last month, we reported that Toni Braxton, Babyface and K.D. Lang will join the cast in February 2014.
