Whoopi Goldberg is gearing up to flex her producing muscles as the star and executive producer of Lifetime’s adaptation of Terry McMillian’s best-selling novel, A Day Late and a Dollar Short.
According to THR, Goldberg will play Viola Price, a woman who tries to fix her fractured family after finding out that her next asthma attack could be fatal. This is the second time Goldberg has appeared in a McMillian movie. The two previously worked together when Goldberg co-starred opposite Angela Bassett in the film adaptation of McMillian’s How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
“Terry McMillan is one of America’s most beloved writers and A Day Late and a Dollar Short combines her signature emotional storytelling with the complex characters viewers identify with and love. We are thrilled to be working again with Whoopi Goldberg, who will be emptying her enormous talents both in front of and behind the camera,” Lifetime GM Rob Sharenow said in a statement announcing the news.
Production for A Day Late and a Dollar Short is slated to begin in the summer for a 2014 premiere.
In other casting news, Indie Wire is reporting that actress-singer Loretta Devine will guest on USA Network comedy series Psych.
Devine will be playing “Foxy” Melba Birdson, a former back-up singer who is tracked down by detectives Lassie, played by Timothy Omundson, to help solve a cold case from 1967.
Devine, will appear in the fifth episode of the show along with special guest star, Peggy Lipton, who plays Scarlett Jones, the love interest of notorious mob boss, “Rodney Caruso.”
The role should be very familiar to Devine considering she was one of the original cast members of the smash Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which was based on the life of 60’s girl group The Supremes.
RC will keep you posted on these projects as they continue to develop.
