Film director Spike Lee is gearing up for what could possibly be his most ambitious project to date.

Lee recently announced that he is producing a documentary to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album.  “Bad” was the follow up to Jackson’s all time number one album, “Thriller” and included such hits as “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Smooth Criminal.”

Lee worked with Jackson throughout his career including Jackson’s controversial video for the song, “They Don’t Care About Us.”  Lee recently talked about the proposed untitled project and what he learned while combing through the late singer’s footage.

“We have footage in this documentary that no one’s ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff,” he said in an interview Monday. “We had complete access to the vaults of Michael Jackson. … He wrote 60 demos for the `Bad’ record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience.”

The documentary is slated to be released later on this year and will include commentary from today’s artists that were influenced by Jackson and those who had the opportunity to work with him.

In the meantime, Lee is planning to host his annual birthday tribute to the King of Pop on August 25 in NYC’s Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

Here is the video that Spike directed for MJ’s They Don’t Care About Us…Enjoy!
