City of Atlanta honors Spike Lee during 30th Anniversary Screening of ‘School Daze’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Award winning filmmaker Spike Lee hosted a very special 30th anniversary screening of his classic film School Daze Monday (February 19) night in Atlanta, GA and it was lit!!!!

The evening took place at the historic Fox Theatre and was attended by throngs of black Greek-letter fraternity and sorority members, HBCU students and alumni and fans of Lee’s cinematic work.

I had the pleasure and privilege of welcoming the nearly sold out crowd and introducing the 60th Mayor of Atlanta – Keisha Lance Bottoms. She presented Lee with the prestigious Phoenix Award, the highest honor an individual can received from the Mayor.

Lee was recognized for his contributions to Atlanta’s bustling film and entertainment industry and for shooting School Daze at the Atlanta University Center in 1988. It was movie projects like his that has helped Georgia become the #1 film location in the world.

I have to admit, watching the movie with thousands of other people was absolutely thrilling. We knew all the lines, the jokes, the dance moves, the steps and the songs including the Tisha Campbell led “I Don’t Wanna Be Alone Tonight” to EU‘s rump shaking classic “Da Butt.”

Noted singer Keisha Jackson and her One Voice Music Group even surprised attendees with a pop-up performance of the film’s opening number, “I’m Building Me a Home.”

#UPFRONT talks to Spike Lee about a ‘School Daze’ Broadway Musical & more (AUDIO)

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Check out my exclusive one-on-one interview with award winning filmmaker SPIKE LEE that aired during today’s edition of my radio show, UPFRONT!

Lee talked about the 30th Anniversary of his classic film, “School Daze” and how he had written the script long before he even conceived “She’s Gotta Have It. ” The movie is also loosely based on his four years as a student at Atlanta’s famed Morehouse College and was originally titled “It’s Homecoming.”

Lee also admitted to separating the female cast of the “Wannabees” and “Jigaboos” offset so that they’re on-set tension was authentic for the cameras. He is also looking to take the film to the Broadway stage in a new musical production instead of a sequel.

“There’s gonna be a Broadway musical of School Daze. People said that from the jump when it came out that this should be a musical,” said Lee. “We have to update some of those issues like apartheid. They’re protesting apartheid in the beginning of the movie and that part never comes up in the rest of the film.”

Lee also talked about the film’s iconic soundtrack that including the smash hit single, “Da Butt,” which he created and had Marcus Miller to write for the Washington D.C. Go-go band Sugar Bear & EU.

Lee will be hosting a special anniversary screening of “School Daze” this Monday, February 19 at Atlanta’s fabulous Fox Theatre at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available but seats are going fast!

UPFRONT talks to Spike Lee about 30th Anniversary of ‘School Daze’

Written by | Ray Cornelius

O-M-G!

I had the unique pleasure of interviewing the G.O.A.T of filmmaking—SPIKE LEE—this past Friday (February 9) for a future edition of my radio show, UPFRONT.

The award-winning director, actor, producer and cinema legend was in town to promote the 30th Anniversary Screening of his film, School Daze, which is taking place on Monday, February 19 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.

Ray Cornelius + Spike Lee + Dr. Herbert L. Eichelberger (Lee’s college professor)

Mr. Lee stopped by the WCLK 91.9 studios to chat with me about the event and his iconic musical that originally debuted in theatres on February 12, 1988. School Daze is arguably one of the best films on HBCU life and culture and is centered on a battle between the “Wannabees” and “Jigaboos” during homecoming weekend. The film also touches on the taboo subjects of colorism and beauty standards within the Black community and features an all-star cast including Larry Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell and the late Bill Nunn, Ossie Davis and Phyllis Hyman

Please tune in on Saturday, February 17 for a special edition of my show which will feature our conversation, music from the film and unforgettable scenes.

Cassi Davis talks marriage, movies, Madea and more with ‘UPFRONT’

Written by | Ray Cornelius

NAACP Image Award winner and beloved television and film actress Cassi Davis has a lot to be smiling about these days. For starters, she will be returning to prime time television next year in a reboot of Tyler Perry‘s popular series, “House of Payne” for the Oprah Winfrey Network. The newly titled show, “The Paynes” will reunite Davis with her TV husband, LaVan Davis and will focus on the couple’s life after retirement.

In addition to the new project, Davis is also sporting a beautiful wedding ring as she recently jumped the broom in Las Vegas (20 days ago) and married her long-time friend and high school sweetheart, Kerry Patton.

“I am so excited. We met in the third grade and of course you grow up and you go your separate ways and we were apart for about twenty years and divinely God brought us back together in 2007. You know, you think you’re committed and you say you’re committed but life just has to live itself and then afterwards, were good. And so now, were married,” said the Spelman College alumnus.

Davis began her career in Spike Lee‘s classic film, “School Daze” and later appeared on episodes of “Living Single,” “Married…with Children” and “Kenan & Kel.” But its has been her stage work with Tyler Perry and her TV and film roles as Ella Payne and Aunt Bam, that have kept her in the spotlight over the years. For Davis, every opportunity to work with the entertainment mogul has proven to be a blessing from above.

“It’s a dream every time he calls. It’s like, ‘you’re calling me again?’ Oh, God thank you! So listen, I live for Aunt Bam and I live for Aunt Ella.”

You can catch the rest of my interview with Cassi Davis this Saturday morning at 9 a.m. on “UPFRONT” Inside Atlanta’s Entertainment Industry. Also, don’t forget that “Boo! A Madea Halloween” and “Tyler Perry’s Madea on the Run” are available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
