You guys all know I love a good play or musical. So it is with great pleasure to announce the upcoming 2018-19 season for Tony-Winning director Kenny Leon and his True Colors Theatre Company.
According to the press release, the new season’s mantra is “Moments Make the Movement” and will feature four dynamic productions that are woven together by a thread of radical change, at the societal, organizational and familial levels.
The season opener is Nina Simone: Four Women by Christina Ham. This “play with music” explores Nina Simone’s shift from popular Jazz singer to vocal activist, following the bombing of Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in 1963.
Back by popular demand is the holiday musical, The First Noel by Lelund Durond Thompson and Jason Michael Webb. It follows three generations of a family forever changed by the tragic loss of a loved one, when an unexpected visit reveals some long-absent Christmas joy.
Next is Dominique Morisseau returns to True Colors’ stage with Skeleton Crew, which is a play about the closing of the last auto plant in Detroit and its impact on the people that worked there. True Colors Associate Artistic Director Jamil Jude will direct this production.
The season will close with Eugene Lee’s East Texas Hot Links, directed by the playwright.
