BET has released another trailer for its highly anticipated mini-series, “The Book of Negroes.”
As previously reported, the film tells the story of Aminata Diallo (Aunjanue Ellis), a West African slave who is abducted and forced to live in the United States. Somehow, Diallo forges her way to freedom and serves with the British in Revolutionary War, registering her name in the historic “Book of Negroes.” It’s a living document of slaves who requested permission to leave the US for resettlement in Nova Scotia.
Based on Clement Virgo’s adaptation, “The Book of Negroes” features Oscar winning-actors Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Louis Gossett, Jr. as well as Lyriq Bent, Ben Chaplin, Allan Hawko and Jane Alexander.
In a recent interview with the CBC, Lou Gossett Jr. revealed that “The Book of Negroes” is a fresh take on the slavery theme, and calls this adaptation an improvement, compared to “Roots” and “12 Years a Slave.”
“Slavery is very much involved in this lady’s life; but it’s really a triumphant story about this woman who can tell the story. In that way, it’s better than Roots, and 12 Years a Slave because it’s a portrait,” said Gossett.
