It looks like Diddy is literally taking Rick Ross’ “King of New York” declaration during this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards to heart. The hip-hop mogul is reportedly teaming up with Oscar-winning director-producer Brian Grazer for a remake of the 90’s film of the same name.
PageSix.com is reporting that Sean “Diddy” Combs will star in an adaptation of Abel Ferrara’s cult gangster classic, King of New York, which originally featured Christopher Walken, Laurence Fishburne and Wesley Snipes. The story is centered on a former drug dealer who returns from jail with a plan to crush his competition while giving back to the community.
According to Grazer’s interview with PageSix.com, this is a film project that Diddy has been working on for quite some time now.
“Sean optioned the rights to remake ‘King of New York’ for two years. The film is a cult classic, and it will be great to remake it. Our version won’t be exactly the same, but will have the same hard-core gangster feel. Sean wants to be in it, he was amazing in ‘Monster’s Ball,’ and such strong characters sit perfectly with him.”
This isn’t Diddy’s first time flexing his acting muscles. He has appeared on stage and in other films such as Monster’s Ball, A Raisin in the Sun, and most recently Get Him to the Greek.
Production for the King is expected to begin in 2014.
