(Actress, Octavia Spencer proudly showing off her Oscar)

Everyone was on pins and needles tonight wondering if we would witness an Oscar first.

For the first time in the Academy’s 84 year history, two African American actresses were nominated in top acting categories: Viola Davis for Best Actress and Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress.

Although at the end of the night it wasn’t the victory we all hoped for, we are still elated that Spencer took home the coveted gold statue. The Help actress appeared humbled during her acceptance speech, thanking everyone from her cast members to her home state of Alabama.

Spencer joins a short but elite list of black actresses who’ve won Oscars in the Best Supporting Actress category: Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson and Monique.

Congratulations once again Octavia!
