Multiple Grammy-winner Alicia Keys wants to change the way you think about HIV!

The singer-songwriter and advocate is now turning her attention to the growing AIDS epidemic in the U.S. by teaming up with Greater Than AIDS for a new initiative aimed at educating women.

EMPOWERED launches today as part of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and includes a robust marketing campaign featuring public service ads (PSAs), social media promotions, informational materials and more.

According to the GTA website, approximately 280,000 – or about one in four – people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. are women.  Unfortunately, women of color represent the majority of these new infections occurring among women in the U.S.

For Keys, these numbers were a wake call that inspired her to do something.

“When I became aware that women accounted for one in five new HIV infections occurring in the U.S. each year, it shook me to the core and I realized this is an issue we ALL need to pay attention to. Whether HIV positive or negative, we all have the opportunity to educate ourselves and make a difference.”

EMPOWERED has also produced a 5-minute video of Keys talking to a diverse panel of women living with HIV. The presentation was created to promote dialogue and bring about awareness.  Check it out below:
