Watch the Final Trailer for ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

AnnaPurna Films has released the final trailer for Barry Jenkins film version of James Baldwin‘s classic story If Beale Street Could Talk. It opens in theaters nationwide this Friday, November 30.

Set in early-1970s Harlem, If Beale Street Could Talk is a timeless and moving love story of both a couple’s unbreakable bond and the African-American family’s empowering embrace, as told through the eyes of 19-year-old Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne). A daughter and wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny (Stephan James). Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.

Through the unique intimacy and power of cinema, If Beale Street Could Talk honors the author’s prescient words and imagery, charting the emotional currents navigated in an unforgiving and racially biased world as the filmmaker poetically crosses time frames to show how love and humanity endure.

The film also features Regina King, Colman Domingo, Teyonah Parris, Brian Tyree HenryAunjanue L. Ellis, Michael BeachEd SkreinDiego Luna, Dave Franco and Pedro Pascal.

Oscar winner Barry Jenkins serves as the project’s director.

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Emmy winning producer and director Anthony Hemingway has joined the producing team of CBS’s upcoming dramatic pilot Murder.

According to S&A, Hemingway will executive produce and direct the project that stars former Survivor’s Remorse actress Teyonah Parris.

As previously reported, Murder will explore crime through the unique and often-conflicting perspectives of cops and killers, witnesses and victims, friends and family. Parris will star as Detective Ayana Lake, who is described as “a rising star in the NYPD whose keen intellect and quick, analytic mind are the keys to her success.

Hemingway has worked on a number of popular series and films throughout his career including Empire, Underground, Shameless, Orange is the New Black, Treme, Red Tails, American Crime Story, True Blood and Shots Fired.

Stay tuned to this weekend’s edition of UPFRONT where I talk to Hemingway and the cast of his new USA Network series Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. It premieres TOMORROW night at 10 p.m. EST.

Teyonah Parris to star in new CBS pilot ‘Murder’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

CONGRATS to Survivor’s Remorse star Teyonah Parris. She will be starring as the lead in a new CBS pilot titled, Murder.  According to S&A, the show is based on the popular BBC miniseries of the same name and is being described as follows:

“This new take on the investigative drama explores crime through the unique and often-conflicting perspectives of cops and killers, witnesses and victims, friends and family. Shot like a true-crime documentary, the series invites the audience inside the emotional journey of an investigation, allowing them to discern the truth and judge the suspects’ guilt or innocence for themselves.”

Parris will star as Detective Ayana Lake, who is described as “a rising star in the NYPD whose keen intellect and quick, analytic mind are the keys to her success. But when she’s partnered with instinctive intuitive Det. Jack Garrity styles and personalities sometimes clash.”

Parris has made quite an impression over the last few years. She became R&B singer Miki Howard in TV One’s original movie, Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story. She also starred in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq and most recently appeared on Empire (She murdered that part, no pun intended). Her next role is in Barry Jenkins‘ film adaptation of James Baldwin‘s If Beale Street Could Talk.

Empire’s Grace Byers applauds her husband Trai Byers for explosive episode (VIDEO)

Written by | Ray Cornelius

“Empire” starlet Grace Byers congratulated her husband and co-star Trai Byers on social media this week for acting his ass off in this week’s emotional episode.  Like many of you, I was in disbelief when it was revealed that Byer’s character—Andre—and his relationship with Teyonah Parris‘ character—Pamela Rose—was a figment of his imagination and never existed at all. It was a definitely plot twist I never saw coming and had me completely captivated and devastated at the same time. It’s just one of the many scenes Lee Daniels has used on the popular series to bring about the awareness of mental illness in the Black community.

Lee or Trai deserve an Emmy or Golden Globe Award this season for that amazing performance/episode.  Check out “The Reconstruction of Pamela Rose” below and don’t forget to tune into “Empire” this Wednesday at 8 p.m. on FOX.

Colman Domingo added to ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

One of my favorite actors to watch—Colman Domingo—is joining Barry Jenkins‘ film adaptation of the James Baldwin literary classic, “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

The NAACP Image Award nominee joins previously announced actors Regina King, Teyonah Parris, Stephan James and KiKi Layne. It is not clear what role Domingo will play in the film.

“If Beale Street Could Talk” follows Fonny and Tish, a young couple who are in the midst of a whirlwind romance until Fonny is falsely accused of rape. After his imprisonment, Tish finds out she is pregnant and she, her family, and her lawyer race against the clock to find evidence that frees Fonny before the baby is born.

Domingo is on my list of “actors who are on the verge of superstardom.” He has appeared in a number of blockbuster films as “Selma,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Lincoln.” He also has appeared on “American Dad,” “Timeless” and currently stars of “The Fear of the Walking Dead.” Domingo is also an accomplished theatre actor and playwright. He is currently developing an original drama series for AMC titled, “In the Middle of the Street.”

RC will keep you posted as this project continues to develop.
