Xscape releases two new songs + hires Vincent Herbert as manager

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Atlanta’s own Xscape kicked off this weekend by releasing two new singles, “Wifed Up” and “Dream Killa.” The group, which is now a trio (LaTocha Scott, Tameka “Tiny” Harris and Tamika Scott), have also hired Vincent Herbert to manage them.

According to HipHollywood, Herbert will oversee the group’s music while Mona Scott-Young will continue to manage their reality show, TV and film projects like the upcoming Bravo biopic.

“We sat down with him, had some food and just talked, like how most business takes place, he just got our vision and he saw the potential in us,” explained Tamika.  “We love what he did with Tamar and Lady Gaga and we also knew he understood the business,” added Tiny. “We’re really excited.”

Herbert is known for discovering Lady Gaga and managing his (estranged) wife Tamar Braxton. He also just recently signed Remy Ma to his roster.

XSCAPE to perform at this year’s ‘ESSENCE FESTIVAL’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

ESSENCE announced today that platinum-selling girl group XSCAPE will be performing at this year’s ESSENCE Festival. This will be their first full performance together in over 15 years and social media has been buzzing all day with excitement.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the return of XSCAPE than in New Orleans with our fans at the world famous, Essence Festival,” the group said in a statement. “Essence Fest is so much more than a music festival, it’s a celebration of culture, music and entertainment. We are excited and honored to be included in an incredible lineup of artists and performers, including the living legend, Diana Ross!”

XSCAPE—Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott—enjoyed global success in the 90s with such hits as “Just Kickin It,” “Understanding,” “My Little Secret,” and “Who Can I Run To.” They were signed to Jermaine Dupri‘s SoSo Def label and helped define the sound of that decade.

Since their reunion earlier this year, the group has teamed up with reality TV guru Mona Scott-Young with plans for a major comeback. TV One is also producing “Who Can I Run To: The Xscape Story,” as part of its new original movies. The film is  inspired by the quartet’s episode of “Unsung,” which was the most popular episode aired in the series’ history. The film is being produced in partnership with Dupri.

Check out one of my favs by them “In the Rain” that was featured on the iconic “Love Jones” soundtrack and click here for your ESSENCE Festival tickets. See you there!

Xscape to reunite in 2014…

Written by | Ray Cornelius

After what has felt like an eternity, the ladies of the 90’s R&B group Xscape have finally put their differences aside and are planning to reunite in the fall of 2014.

Sources close to the group are telling me that all of the original members Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, Tamika Scott and LaTocha Scott are currently in negotiations to record new music but nothing has been set in stone. Sources are also telling me that the reunion will take place on a television special next year and NOT on this season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta  as reported by the SingersRoom.com and Sister2Sistermagazine.com.

For years, fans have been wondering if the group would ever record again after so much “he said, she said” beef between Kandi Burruss and LaTocha Scott. Xscape produced such chart topping hits as “Just Kickin It,”  “Who Can I Run To?” and my personal favorite, “In the Rain” which was a remake of The Dramatic’s classic song.

Since their break up the ladies have ventured into other areas of entertainment including Kandi’s two reality shows The Real Housewives of Atlanta  and The Kandi Factory, Tiny’s talk show Tiny Tonight  and T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle  and LaTocha Scott on R&B Divas.

RC will keep you posted as more information develops!

Jermaine Dupri kicks off So So Def 20th Anniversary Weekend with private dinner + PHOTOS

Jermaine Dupri with Jagged Edge

Written by | Ray Cornelius

All eyes will be on Atlanta this weekend as super music producer Jermaine Dupri celebrates the 20th Anniversary of his beloved So So Def Records. Most of the label’s artists are on hand for the festivities which include an anniversary concert tomorrow night at The Fabulous Fox Theater.

Last night Dupri officially kicked things off with a private dinner for his artists and industry supporters. It was his way of honoring all of the individuals that contributed to his label’s success.

“This is my way of saying thank you for helping me build the So So Def empire,” continued Dupri. “This is a historical moment, so tonight I’m celebrating you. Sit back, relax…I’m gonna serve you. But enjoy it, because that will never happen again!”

Everyone from Bow Wow to Da Brat to Bonecrusher and Dem Franchise Boyz was in da house for a lavish meal by Chef Michael Hebb. Also present were Dupri’s newest artist Dondria along with Dupri’s father and veteran music executive Michael Maudlin.

For some of the artists, this weekend is a family reunion of sorts. For others, like Bow Wow and Chris Kelly of the duo Kris Kross, this is an opportunity to get acquainted for the first time as Dupri pointed out.

“In all these years, this is the first time that Bow Wow and Chris Kelly have ever met,” announced Dupri during the dinner. “Bow Wow is a product of Kris Kross, so the fact that we can bring everyone together like this means a lot.”
