Watch Tamar Braxton’s new video for ‘The Makings of You’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Tamar Braxton is taking us back down memory lane in the new video for her single, “The Makings of You.” The award-winning songstress puts her spin on the old 1970s classic written and recording first by the late Curtis Mayfield and then re-recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips for the 1974 cinema classic Claudine.

In the video, Tamar is rocking a “Willona” from Good Times wig along with a “Thelma” from Good Times floral ensemble. She’s also reminiscing on the good love she is receiving from her new man. While the video says she is “some where in D.C.”  it was actually shot at the childhood home of Instagram star Lonnie Bee, who makes a grand appearance at the end of the video.

“The Makings of You” appears on Braxton’s current album, BlueBird of Happiness.

Check it out below and tell us what you think!

Eric Benet, Demetria McKinney and more join ‘Redemption of Dogg’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

More star power has been added to Je’Caryous Johnson‘s new stage play Redemption of a Dogg featuring Snoop Dogg and Tamar Braxton.

The show chronicles a character built around the persona of the iconic rapper and examines the internal battle one man has between preserving his life-long legacy and losing the love of his life when he is faced with choosing fame and fortune over faith and family.

Redemption Of A Dogg is set against a backdrop of Snoop’s greatest hits, as well as, songs from his recently released chart-topping Gospel album, Bible Of Love. This will be the rapper’s theatrical debut while Braxton will star as “The Angel” who helps guide him through his life’s journey.

New cast members include four-Time Grammy Award Nominee Eric Benet in the role of Terrence, Snoop Dogg’s manager who ultimately starts managing Snoop’s wife in more ways than one. Saints & Sinners star Demetria McKinney will take on the role of Shani, Snoop Dogg’s wife.  Family Time star Omar Gooding will appear as Ray Boogie, Snoop Dogg’s DJ and long-time friend and producer. Rounding out the cast is actor and comedian James “Lil JJ” Lewis in the role of Young Snoop + American Idol alum and original Color Purple Musical star LaTaya London

“Audiences will not be ready for what this show is going to give them,” said Johnson. “This will be unlike anything urban theatre audiences have seen. Think of merging some of the best moments of Cirque Du Soleil, Preacher’s Wife, Straight Outta Compton and Back to The Future all into one. It will be one of the most moving, visually stimulating, dramatic and musically charged shows they have seen with some of the most talented, iconic musical stars of our time. They can’t afford to miss this show.”

WATCH Trailer for TV One’s New Docu-Series #UNCENSORED (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The other day, I posted a story about RHOA star NeNe Leakes being apart of a new TV One series and wasn’t sure about her role or any details. Well, TV One sent me an email late last night with all of the deets and I can’t be more excited.

The new docuseries is titled “UNCENSORED” and it explores the intimate lives of today’s stars and personalities. It premieres next month on Sunday, February 18 at 10 p.m. EST.

The 10-episode semi-autobiographical series gives unprecedented access to our favorite faces including Leakes as well as Tiffany Haddish, LaLa Anthony, Tamar Braxton, Charlemagne Da God, Le’Andria Johnson, Nia Long, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg. It features them in their own stories, in their own words, in the places where their stories unfolded.  The show is also the first project to be greenlit by general manager Michelle Rice, who also developed the concept.

UNCENSORED is an edgier, in-depth docu-series where the subjects get to talk the audience in first person about the moments in their lives that helped make them who they are today,” said Rice. “TV One is about telling authentic stories and this show will chronicle people of influence in pop culture, music and entertainment that captivate people of all ages.”

In its first season, “UNCENSORED” dives deep into the lives of these celebrated individuals with first-hand accounts of their road to stardom from the stars themselves. They speak directly and candidly about their personal triumphs and successes, the obstacles and challenges they have faced, and the pivotal moments that have shaped their lives and careers. No topic is off limits as they discuss issues relevant to today’s national dialogue such as race relations, drugs and violence, and sexual harassment.

In addition to first-person interviews, “UNCENSORED” uncovers little known facts with an expansive and impressive list of friends and family who know them best.

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Multi-Grammy winning singer-songwriter Toni Braxton was all smiles last night on the red carpet of BMI R&B Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta, GA. The “Un-Break My Heart” vocalist was honored with this year’s coveted President’s Award for her 25 years in the entertainment industry. Other honorees included fellow Atlantan Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges and Will.i.am.  The annual award ceremony recognizes the songwriters and publishers of the year’s most-performed R&B/hip-hop songs during the 2016 and took place at the prestigious Symphony Hall of The Woodruff Art Center.

IMG_5773Joining Braxton on the red carpet were her famous sisters—-Trina, Towanda and Traci—along with her not so little sons, Denim and Diezel. Her mother, father and brother were also in attendance while Tamar Braxton and Toni’s boyfriend, Birdman, joined them inside the auditorium.

The show was hosted by comedian Chris Tucker alongside BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations in Atlanta, Catherine Brewton and featured performances by some of the hottest talent in the music industry. IMG_5229The second half of the evening included an array of outstanding tribute performances honoring Toni Braxton beginning with Donald Lawrence & Company performing “You Mean the World to Me” and vocal powerhouse Yolanda Adams received a standing ovation with her moving rendition of “Un-Break My Heart.” Three of the Braxton sisters, Towanda, Traci, and Trina paid homage to their sister showcasing their incredible talent on “Breathe Again” and R&B chanteuse Ledisi wowed the audience with “Seven Whole Days.” After a moving introduction by L.A. Reid, Ms. Braxton took center stage for a spectacular performance of fan favorite, “He Wasn’t Man Enough” with her sisters on backing vocals.
Throughout the evening, the 35 best-performing R&B/Hip-Hop songs in the U.S. from BMI’s repertoire of over 10.5 million musical works were named along with Top Producers Awards going to Ben “Billions” Diehl and Southside. Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The Recording Academy announced nominations earlier today for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards airing on February 15, 2016 at 8 p.m. on CBS.

A big congratulations goes out to hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar, who picked up 11 nods including ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘Best Music Video,’ and ‘Best Rap Song.’ Trailing behind him is The Weekend, who earned seven nominations including ‘Record of the Year,’ ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Best R&B Song,’ and ‘Best R&B Performance.’

Other contenders include R&B vocalists Jazmine Sullivan, Andra Day and D’Angelo, who all scored three nominations while Tyrese and Charlie Wilson are up for two categories including ‘Best Traditional R&B Performance.’

Additional nominees include DrakeTamar Braxton, Nicki Minaj, Lalah Hathaway, Fetty Wap, Robert Glasper and more. Artists that were surprisingly not included amongst this year’s nominees are Janet Jackson and Jill Scott. Both released new projects earlier this year to a lot of fanfare but received no love from the Academy.

“The diversity in the creative community is what makes music a universal language, and it’s gratifying to see the vibrancy of today’s artistic landscape reflected in this year’s nominations — a testament to The Academy’s voting members,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. “Artists are pushing boundaries in exciting ways, making it an exceptionally strong year for music.”
