Watch Trailer for TV One’s ‘The Bobby DeBarge Story’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

TV One has released the trailer and official poster for its upcoming original film The Bobby DeBarge Story. It airs on Saturday, June 29 at 8 p.m. followed by an encore presentation at 10 pm.

Debuting during Black Music Month, the film’s stars include Roshon Fegan (Shake It Up, Greenleaf) in the lead role as Bobby DeBarge, Tyra Ferrell (Boyz InThe Hood, White Men Can’t Jump) as Etterlene DeBarge, Blue Kimble (Media) as Tommy DeBarge and Adrian Marcel as James DeBarge. Big Boi (Outkast) portrays legendary music mogul Berry Gordy, while Lloyd appears as Switch member Gregory Williams.

In his first role as a leading man, Fegan brilliantly transforms into the falsetto master and takes audiences inside the tumultuous life of the former lead singer of the late 70’s R&B/Funk Band Switch.

“The most dynamic and powerful acting role I’ve ever portrayed,” shared Fegan. “It was an honor to tell this musical legend’s life story.”

Despite his success in music, Bobby DeBarge, the eldest sibling of the world-famous pop group DeBarge struggled with fame and fortune and found his life in peril. The film explores the highs and lows of the singer’s life in the limelight, including his rise to stardom, coping with memories of his dysfunctional childhood, romantic relationships, struggles with substance abuse, incarceration and failing health.

“It was truly amazing watching the characters unfold in front of my eyes and the incredible acting that was bestowed upon this project,” said the film’s director Russ Parr.  “I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by the performances that they see. Although this is a tragic story, I believe it’s told with dignity and respect to the legacy of Bobby DeBarge.” Parr is also a writer and producer known for the award-winning The Undershepherd, Hear No Evil and 35 and Ticking.

The Bobby DeBarge Story is the latest addition to TV One’s successful slate of acclaimed original films that range from dramas and comedies to biopics and more. TV One’s highest-rated original film When Love Kills debuted #1 on cable among African-American households in its premiere time slot. Original feature films Love Under New Management and Bobbi Kristina rank at #2 and #3, respectively, in the network’s history – both were also #1 on cable among African-American households in their premiere time slots.

WATCH Trailer for TV One’s New Docu-Series #UNCENSORED (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The other day, I posted a story about RHOA star NeNe Leakes being apart of a new TV One series and wasn’t sure about her role or any details. Well, TV One sent me an email late last night with all of the deets and I can’t be more excited.

The new docuseries is titled “UNCENSORED” and it explores the intimate lives of today’s stars and personalities. It premieres next month on Sunday, February 18 at 10 p.m. EST.

The 10-episode semi-autobiographical series gives unprecedented access to our favorite faces including Leakes as well as Tiffany Haddish, LaLa Anthony, Tamar Braxton, Charlemagne Da God, Le’Andria Johnson, Nia Long, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg. It features them in their own stories, in their own words, in the places where their stories unfolded.  The show is also the first project to be greenlit by general manager Michelle Rice, who also developed the concept.

UNCENSORED is an edgier, in-depth docu-series where the subjects get to talk the audience in first person about the moments in their lives that helped make them who they are today,” said Rice. “TV One is about telling authentic stories and this show will chronicle people of influence in pop culture, music and entertainment that captivate people of all ages.”

In its first season, “UNCENSORED” dives deep into the lives of these celebrated individuals with first-hand accounts of their road to stardom from the stars themselves. They speak directly and candidly about their personal triumphs and successes, the obstacles and challenges they have faced, and the pivotal moments that have shaped their lives and careers. No topic is off limits as they discuss issues relevant to today’s national dialogue such as race relations, drugs and violence, and sexual harassment.

In addition to first-person interviews, “UNCENSORED” uncovers little known facts with an expansive and impressive list of friends and family who know them best.

Is NeNe Leakes starring in a new TV One Series? [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Could “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star NeNe Leakes be appearing in a new series for TV One? According to a recent Instagram post, the reality diva and television actress is part of some new project titled, “UNCNSRD.”  That’s “uncensored” folks.

The post features several images of Leakes sitting in a directors chair on stage with the audience as her backdrop. With that said, I have the following questions:

Is this a new version of “Inside the Actor’s Studio”?

Is Nene the host?

Does this have something to do with comedy?

I guess we’ll just have to wait for TV One’s upfronts when all of their new programs, original movies and reality shows will be revealed. One thing I do know is that it’s being shot by my friends at Swirl Films.

Stay tuned and check out more images below:

AAFCA salutes Rob Hardy at 2017 #SYNERGYAWARDS [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

One of Atlanta’s pioneers in television and film—Rob Hardy—was honored Thursday night during the 2017 Synergy Awards. The annual summer ceremony was presented by Gil Robertson and the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) and took place at Bobbcat Studios.

The Synergy Awards is one of AAFCA’s signature events and celebrates inroads made by film and TV professionals in the Southeast. It also provides an opportunity for creative professionals in and around the area to connect and collaborate with their peers across the industry.

Hardy was acknowledged for laying a foundation for Atlanta’s current boom in television and film production. The ceremony included a video presentation featuring congratulatory messages from a number of Hardy’s close friends and collaborators like fellow filmmaker Roger M. Bobb, iconic casting director Reuben Cannon, longtime partner Will Packer, Rainforest Entertainment’s Mitzi Miller and Liquid Soul’s Tirrell Whitley.

“Rob is getting this award because Atlanta is number one [applause]…in terms of TV and productions in the world. A large part of that has been because of his efforts,” said Robertson to the attendees.

Hardy began his film career as a student on the campus of Florida A&M University with Packer and their very first project, “Chocolate City.” After graduation, the two moved to Jonesboro, GA where they formed their production company, Rainforest Films. Their next movie, “Trois,” elevated the profile of their brand and opened doors for them to go on and produce a string of other hit films including “Motives,” “Stomp the Yard,” “Think Like a Man,” “Think Like a Man Too” and “No Good Deed.”  Hardy also has credits on such hit television shows as “Empire,” “How To Get Away with Murder,” and “Castle.” His most recent endeavor included creating and executive producing BET’s “The Quad.” He also has two other shows lined up including one with hip hop star Clifford “T.I.” Harris.

“Sometimes doors are closed to force you and I to find other routes to tell our stories. We all have a place here.  Just because you see someone else’s name in lights, doesn’t mean that your time’s not coming…if you just continue to work and believe,” said Hardy to the attendees.

Celebrities in attendance included “Underground” and “Hit the Floor” actor Rob Riley, “Hollywood Divas” star Lisa Wu, plus “Saints and Sinners “actresses Jasmine Burke and Dawn Halfkenny. Past Synergy Award recipients, Keith Neal and Eric Tomosunas, were also in attendance as well as industry professionals—Dianne AshfordAsante Bradford, April Love, Jess Manning, Angela WattsChelsye Burrows and George Pierre.

RC Exclusive - Ent visits the set of TV One’s ‘Downsized’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Beloved TV and film stars Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker have returned to their Atlanta roots for the filming of TV One’s newest original movie, “Downsized.” The former “Soul Food” actors are starring in this faith-based drama that is set to premiere at this year’s American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on June 16 and on TV One in August.

In the film Downsized, Ebony (Parker) and Michael (Kodjoe) were forced into a modern “shotgun” wedding after becoming teenaged parents, putting their personal goals on hold in order to support their family. Amazingly, the two high school sweethearts manage to overcome the odds and establish a seemingly ideal life for themselves.

However, the success that initially was meant to strengthen their family has become the very thing that is driving them apart. As a result, Michael desperately tries to hold onto everything he’s worked his entire life to gain. This leads the family on an unconventional adventure to restore the faith, hope, and trust that initially brought them together.

The film also Alexus Lapri Geier as Madison, Racquel Bianca John as Michelle, Isaiah John as Mike, Jr. and Tia Hendricks as Malaysia. “Downsized” is written by Michelle McKissick (2016 ABFF Screenplay Finalist 2016) and is directed by Rhonda Baraka. It is also produced for TV One by Swirl Films and is executive produced by Eric Tomosunas.

“We love Atlanta! We love the people. We love the feeling we get when we’re here,” said Kodjoe to RC during the set visit.

“We spent five important years here in Atlanta when we first had our kids. Atlanta gave us a security and a safety net to be here and not have to worry about being accosted or under the microscope. We could really focus on our kids and be a young family.”

TV One buys Dena Rivera’s ‘Breaking News: School Shooting’ film

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Congrats to my friend Dena Rivera! The Atlanta-based writer and director recently announced the sale of her film “Breaking News: School Shooting” to TV One Network. Swirl Films will serve as the production studio for the project, which will be produced in association with Rivera’s DeMar Productions.

12193444_10206690948887402_8515416945429942294_n“Breaking News: School Shooting” is based on a true story that depicts a school’s bookkeeper struggling against incredible odds in her personal life, arriving at work only to receive devastating news. While preparing to face this crisis, as well as the normal challenges of her workday, in walks an armed stranger pointing a loaded AK-47 assault rifle and declaring, “We are all going to die today.” The gunman has a plan; slaughter a massive number of children, some cops and then kill himself. He has enough ammunition to take out every living person in the building. This is more than just the amazing account of tragedy averted. It is the story of what can happen when we allow ourselves to be used for good.

“We are thrilled to work with Swirl Films and TV One to bring ‘Breaking News: School Shooting’ to audiences around the world as the film details the underpinning of the outrageous trend toward mass shootings all over the world. We are sure this action/drama will resonate brilliantly with global viewers,” says Rivera. “The goal is to entertain and educate while increasing the awareness of mental illness and the gun control issues that plaque our world. It is to deliver content that is unique in tone and unsurpassed in quality, always captivating viewers and leaving them craving for more.”

I have known Dena Rivera for 13 years now and first met her when we starred in an Atlanta theater production of “The Wiz.” I am so proud of her and can’t wait until this airs. Hopefully I can get some behind-the-scenes footage when the film starts production.

Stay tuned…
