Ray Cornelius to co-host AHF’s ‘World AIDS Day Concert’ on 12/5 [PHOTOS]

Happy Wednesday family and welcome back to RayCornelius.com.

Allow me to apologize for disappearing on you guys in November but I was having some serious tech issues with the site. However, we are back up and running and I have a lot of catching up and sharing to do with you.

“Drumroll please…”

It gives me so much pleasure to announce that I will be co-hosting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) “World AIDS Day Concert” tomorrow night (Thursday, December 5) featuring R&B, pop and dance music diva DEBORAH COX, R&B and soul music prince RAHEEM DEVAUGHN and hip hop artist KCAMP. It all goes down at Center Stage Atlanta beginning at 6:30 p.m. and is FREE and open to the public.

This is actually my second time working with AHF and I am completely thrilled that they asked my back. I gave the opening remarks during their 2017 screening of Nathan Hale Williams‘ indie short 90 Days during the BronzeLens Film Festival.

Tomorrow night’s concert is the last of several events AHF presented commemorating World AIDS Day (December 1). Check out photos below from the Los Angeles show which featured POSE star and Tony Award winning actor and singer BILLY PORTER and R&B/Hip Hop icon FAITH EVANS + the Dallas show which featured TEYANA TAYLOR and living legend and music icon DIANA ROSS.

Goapele + Raheem DeVaughn team up with AHF + WORLD for ‘RISE Above’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

It was all about female empowerment last night during the “RISE Above” Campaign at the Fabulous Fox Theater’s Egyptian Ballroom. The event was free and open to the public and featured live performances from soul music star Goapele and Grammy-nominated R&B crooner Raheem DeVaughn. There was also poetry, giveaways and an insightful conversation about women’s health and wellness, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

“RISE Above” is an initiative that was developed between AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and Oakland-based WORLD (Women Organized to Respond to Life Threatening Diseases). It was launched in March 2017, during National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness month, and has since traveled to Oakland, CA; Chicago, IL; and Cleveland, OH. It culminated last night in Atlanta, GA.

Inspired by the powerful and impactful poem, “Still I Rise”, written by the iconic artist, educator and author, the late Dr. Maya Angelou, the “RISE Above” campaign, also focused on eliminating HIV related stigma by educating and empowering women of color about healthy relationships and responsibilities. One of the evening’s highlights was a PSA featuring Emmy-winning “Greenleaf” star Lynn Whitfield reciting Dr. Angelou’s famous words.

According to current statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 4 individuals living with HIV in the United States are women. Black/African American and Hispanic/Latina women continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, compared with women of other races/ethnicities. Of the total estimated number of women living with diagnosed HIV at the end of 2013, 61% (137,504) were African American, 17% (39,177) were white, and 17% (38,664) were Hispanics/Latinas.

“Across our country, women of color, from all backgrounds, continue to be impacted disproportionately by HIV and other sexually transmitted infectious diseases. As the world’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization, celebrating 30 years of positive impact around the globe, AHF is pleased to collaborate with our other partners to present this powerful evening of music, conversation and inspiration with these two amazing artists. Bringing together black women, and inspiring them to break through stigma, and become both sexually educated and empowered to Rise Above HIV is a goal we all share,” stated Samantha Granberry, AHF Vice-President of Marketing and Sales.

Another highlight of the evening was Atlanta City Council President, Ceasar Mitchell, presenting AHF and WORLD with an official proclamation declaring  November 3 as “RISE Above Day” in the city.

‘Love Jones the Musical’ to premiere this fall

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Some of R&B music’s biggest names are set to star in a stage adaptation of the 1997 film “Love Jones.” Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, MC Lyte, Raheem DeVaughn and Dave Hollister make up the cast for a new production that begins on September 9th in Oklahoma City.

unnamed-91According to the show’s press release, the stage play takes the essence of the film and tells its story through music. Fusing chart-topping hits and fan favorite songs from the music artists, along with a few original songs, “Love Jones The Musical,” will be a transformative experience for the audience.

“We are really excited about this opportunity to break new ground with this musical, as it relates to African American offerings in theater around the country,” says producer Melvin Childs. “Our team has created something truly special and sincerely hope to live up to the expectations of the fans of the iconic film, Love Jones.”

“Love Jones” was originally released on March 14, 1997 and became a cult classic film that captured the hearts and imagination of an entire generation. The soundtrack was equally impressive with a blend of neo-soul and R&B hits that fueled the 90s including Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Dionne Farris, Kenny Lattimore and Xscape. The film was written and directed by Theodore Witcher and tells the classic, yet gritty, love story of Darius Lovehall (an up & coming writer and self-proclaimed renaissance man) and Nina Mosley (an aspiring photographer). The film starred Larenz Tate, Nia Long, Isaiah Washington, Bill Bellamy and Lisa Nicole Carson.

Vivian Green returns with Fifth Studio Album, ‘VIVID’ now available for Pre-Order

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

In anticipation of its August 7, 2015 release date, Vivian Green’s fifth studio album Vivid, is now available for pre-order on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon. Along with their orders, fans will instantly receive a new song from the forthcoming release, “I’m Not Broken,” which debuted on Vibe.com today.

Produced entirely by Kwamé, Vivid is a far cry from the sad songs and break-up anthems Vivian has delivered on previous releases. “We wanted to make an album that was a reflection of who I am – this being my life as a woman,” Vivian tells Vibe. “A lot of our past music was very sad. I’m a different person now. I can’t possibly be in that place now. I would like them to embrace the change.

vivid inside“It’s still me,” she adds, “the same creative person who purges through her music just the same – just not depressing.” As evidenced by the first single “Get Right Back To My Baby,” on Vivid she is inviting her audience to dance, with a bevy of up-tempo songs blending with powerful ballads to further cement Vivian’s reputation as one of the foremost vocalists of her generation.

And if the single’s success is any indication, the fans who have followed the songbird since her hit debut single, “Emotional Rollercoaster,” are welcoming the new energy with open arms. “Get Right Back To My Baby” is currently Top 20 at the #13 position on Billboard’s “Adult R&B Songs” chart, thanks in no small part to the support of radio stations in major markets including New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and New Orleans.

Vivian offers more of the same on the deceptively sweet, “123,” a throwback to Motown which remind a misbehaving lover how easily she can walk away; and the bouncy final track, “Leave It All Behind.”

While Vivid presents a change in direction, the album covers some familiar territory for Vivian Green fans, as evidenced by the assertive mid-tempo second single, “I’m Not Broken.” And with the support of Raheem Devaughn, she delivers one of two power ballads in “All I Want Is You.” Overall, Vivid is an ode to love, not heartbreak; a celebration of the highs and the lows, with a reminder that the lows are never around for long.

As with Vivian Green’s previous two releases, Vivid is being released independently and is the first project coming from Kwamé’s Make Noise/Caroline imprint. “Vivid gives the audience the fun, bubbly, and vibrant side of Vivian,” says Kwamé, “A side that her family and circle of friends know well, but the listener rarely gets to witness.”

Raheem DeVaughn dedicates song profits to Trayvon Martin Foundation + PHOTOS

Raheem singing “Woman” and “Ridiculous” during the Tom Joyner Famly Reunion

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Grammy-nominated singer Raheem DeVaughn is putting his talent to good use. The R&B crooner recently announced that proceeds from his new single, “Trigga Man,” will benefit the Trayvon Martin Foundation.

DeVaughn was inspired to write and record the song after George Zimmerman was declared innocent of murdering Trayvon Martin last month.  “America is at a tipping point,” says DeVaughn. “This country has made huge accomplishments, but it’s still very much divided. The undertone of racism still exists and modern day slaves still exist.”

The song which is currently on sale via iTunes is styled in the same vein as Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin On” and features veteran rapper Styles P as well as DeVaughn speaking for Martin in a kind of open letter to George Zimmerman.

“Dear murderer,” he sings. “Did you ever stop to think that I coulda been a surgeon, a father, a grandpa one day? Did you ever stop to think…or was it hatred on your mind?”

Click here to purchase the song, “Trigga Man.”
