Keith Powers, Ryan Destiny and Luke James @Clark Atlanta University [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Actors from “The New Edition Story” and Lee Daniels‘ “Star” dropped by Clark Atlanta University Thursday afternoon to speak to a classroom of aspiring theater students. The intimate conversation was presented by Farrinheit411 and was part of CAU’s weeklong Homecoming activities.

Keith Powers, Ryan Destiny and Luke James were greeting by high-pitched screams and a thunderous applause as they entered the Mass Media Arts Black Box Theater. The triple threat performers talked candidly about their roles, their time on set and in between projects and their newfound fame.

Powers and James both appeared in this year’s highly anticipated BET biopic about iconic R&B supergroup New Edition. They both talked about meeting each other on set and how quickly they formed a fraternal bond with the rest of the cast members. Powers portrayed Ronnie DeVoe while James starred as Johnny Gill.

Destiny is one of the three main actresses on Lee Daniels’ hit Fox series “Star.” The show, which is now in its second season, features her along with Jude Demorest and Brittany O’Grady as a trio of singers trying to make it in Atlanta’s cutthroat music industry. Destiny plays Alexandra “Alex” Crane, a wealthy 19-year-old singer-songwriter who grew up in the shadows of her famous rock star father played by Lenny Kravitz and her prime & proper mother played by supermodel—Naomi Campbell.

In addition to the students asking questions, they also shared with the actors their personal aspirations and how attending an HBCU (Historal Black College and University) has brought them closer to their goals and dreams.

Luke James wants Elijah Kelly to play SDJ in upcoming biopic

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Grammy nominated-singer and star of “The New Edition Story” Luke James took to social media Friday to express his desire to see his co-star Elijah Kelley play Sammy Davis Jr. in a forthcoming biopic. James posted side-by-side photos of both Kelley and Davis and their similarities are eerie!

“@lionelrichie I know you won’t see this, but my brother @oneelijahkelley was born for this role…” said James as his caption.

The film James is referring to is an upcoming production that is being produced by music legend Lionel Richie along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mike Menchel. It has already received the blessings from the Davis estate and is based on Davis’ 1965 memoir, “Yes I Can: The Story of Sammy Davis, Jr.”

While I am not sure if this is the same Davis project that Kelley was attached to in 2007, I know for certain it would be a dream come true for the young star.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed and keeping my prayers up,” said Kelley in a 2007 interview with MTV. “You know what? It’s like this: I just want to make the project a quality project. … Regardless of whether there’s 25 of them out, [I want to make] the one that’s supposed to be seen, and supposed to be heard, and supposed to be felt.”

RC will keep you posted as this story continues to develop!

Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis & Babyface to serve as Music Producers for BET’s ‘The New Edition Story’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

BET has recruited legendary music producers Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds for the upcoming mini-series “The New Edition Story.” The Grammy winning icons will join executive producer Jesse Collins and award-winning director Chris Robinson.

“The New Edition Story” is the brainchild of Collins who says the idea first came to him when he was producing 25 Strong: The BET Silver Anniversary Special (2005) and New Edition was set to perform. “New Edition was pure magic on stage. The first time I got to see the behind the scenes challenges that they were dealing with to function as a group was during production of the special. I reached out to Michael Bivins after the show and we started the process to produce a film based on the group,” said Collins. “Ten years later, after production delays, we were finally able to tell their story.”

The much-anticipated biopic follows the famed group (Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell & Johnny Gill) from their humble beginnings as kids in Boston to global mega stardom- weathering the highs and lows of controversy, personnel changes, and the ultimate cost of fame. It features an all-star cast including Bryshere Y. Gray, Elijah Kelley, Luke James, Keith Powers, Algee Smith, Woody McClain as New Edition along with La La Anthony, Yvette Nicole Brown, Monica Calhoun, Lisa Nicole Carson, Sandi McCree, Wood Harris, Michael Rapaport, Faizon Love, Duane Martin, Tank and Bre-Z.

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, with 17-Grammy Award wins collectively (11 for Babyface, six for Jam & Lewis, all receiving awards for Producer of the Year) were already an integral part of the careers of the members of New Edition. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced New Edition’s 1988 seminal, Double Platinum-selling album “Heartbreak,” their highest selling album to date as well as produced Ralph Tresvant’s solo breakout #1 single “Sensitivity” and Johnny Gills #1 single “Rub You The Right Way.” ‘Heartbreak’ ushered in a new, mature sound for the band, introduced Johnny Gill into the group after the group voted out Bobby Brown and featured five singles including #1 & #2 Billboard R&B tracks “Can You Stand the Rain” and “If It Isn’t Love” respectively.

“Terry and I came in at a pivotal time when they were having internal issues and growing pains. Fans will get the true behind-the-scenes story of this key phase in their personal lives and careers,” said Harris. Lewis added, “Their songs are like a time capsule, not only capturing the quintessential 80’s R&B sound but also document the New Edition journey particularly transitioning from a boy band to adult stars. ”

Edmonds will serve as the music producer for the first half of “The New Edition Story,” but ironically he and producing partner L.A. Reid were responsible for crafting almost half of the hits, including the Grammy-Award winning “Every Little Step,” from Bobby Brown’s explosive 1988 sophomore solo album, ‘Don’t Be Cruel.’ “I learned a lot about Bobby and the band dynamic during the making of ‘Don’t Be Cruel.’ But I also lived and breathed 80’s R&B because I was performing with my band (The Deele) and producing with L.A. Reid, so I make sure the feeling was captured,” said Babyface.

“The New Edition Story” will air as a six hour, three night event on January 24, 25, and 26, 2017 at 9 PM ET/PT on BET.

RC attends an evening with Luke James and George Tandy, Jr. (VIDEO) + [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

While everyone was up to their knees in “Stankonia” at Outkast’s 20th Anniversary Finale Concert in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, I was on the other side of town enjoying the rich sounds of singer-songwriter, Luke James. The Grammy-nominated performer brought his multi-city tour to Midtown Atlanta’s Vinyl Sunday night for an evening of bonafide soul music.

The mostly female audience filled the intimate space from front to back, hoping to catch a glimpse of R&B’s “it” boy. The show opened with newcomer, George Tandy, Jr., who performed a medley of tunes including his Billboard topping single, “March.” Tandy, who reminds me slightly of Usher (circa 2000), flirted and teased the audience with his soft tenor vocals while engaging them in a few “call and response” songs about relationships gone wrong.

After a brief intermission, Luke James took over the stage like a ravenous wolf, dressed in all black from head to toe. The 30-year-old New Orleans bred-singer, who recently opened for Beyoncé’s Mrs. Carter Tour, began his set with the infectious, “Dancing in the Dark.” From there, he led his screaming fans through a number of other sensual grooves such as “Oh God,” “Options,” “Make Love to Me,” “Stay with me,” and “Strawberry Vapors.”

This was my third time seeing James in action and each show is better than the one before. The intensity in which he delivers his songs coupled with those tender moments of vulnerability is priceless and rarely seen in some of today’s artists. Believe me, there is nothing mechanical or artificial about a Luke James show. After the 75-minute long set, James ended with two of my personal favorites, “IOU” and the Grammy-nominated, “I Want You.”

After the show, James met with Atlanta press for a brief Q&A and photo session. During that time, he talked about his musical influences (Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Donny Hathaway) and his admiration for Beyoncé’s career. He also talked about his desire for future collabs with Jessie James, Jazmine Sullivan and Kanye West.

Check out photos below and video from the Q&A:
