I had the pleasure of attending the first live performance of the modern soul outfit, The Dangerfeel Newbies. The diverse group of musicians jammed to an intimate crowd on Sunday evening at The Music Room in the historic 4th Ward District.
Jamal Ahmad singing lead on “You Make Me Something”
The Atlanta-based group performed selections from their critically acclaimed debut album, “Hariet,” including the ladies anthem,”You Make Me Something,” the disco-inspired “Shine” and “Always With Me,” which will appear on a future episode of BET’s hugely popular original series, “Being Mary Jane.” The group also performed such classic hits as De La Soul’s “A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturday” and “Sending My Love” by the 90’s duo Zhané.
Julie Dexter singing “I Gotta Live My Life”
The Dangerfield Newbies consist of singer-songwriters—Jamal Ahmad, Darren “DJ” Wagner and Mark Angel. Joining them on vocals were Jarvis Green, Mia Laquan and McKei Char’et. The “Queen of UK Soul” Julie Dexter also graced the stage on their hit single, “I Gotta Live My Life,” which turned into a musical tribute to Mike Brown, Eric Gardner and Trayvon Martin. Rounding out the band was drummer Henry Conerway III (formerly of Jaspects) and noted percussionist/flutist Nakayo.
Rising vocalist Ruby Woo opened the show with a brief acoustic set featuring guitarist J Lang and the show was hosted by Fort Knox.
