Birmingham, Alabama was the place to be last night for the BBVA Compass Concert for Human Rights. The celebration was held at the city’s BJCC Arena and was hosted by multi-award winning comedian Jamie Foxx. Musical entertainment was provided by R&B legend Uncle Charlie Wilson and singer-actress Jill Scott.
According to AL.com, the Live Nation produced fundraiser was one of many events supporting Birmingham’s “50 Years Forward” campaign, which commemorated the 50th Anniversary of events of the civil rights movement that occurred in the city in 1963. Other scheduled highlights included a Spike Lee Film Festival, The Four Little Girls Foundation gala and sermons from the historic 16th Street Church.
Award presentations were made last night to Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery, Elder Bernice A. King and Myrna Carter Jackson with a special appearance by the Rev. Jessie Jackson and Kevin Johnson, Mayor of Sacramento, CA.
Earlier that day, Reverend Lowery participated in the city’s official statue dedication to honor the lives of the “Four Little Girls” who were killed on September 15, 1963.
