Deadline is reporting that “Selma” director, Ava DuVernay and her film’s star, Oprah Winfrey are developing a new original drama series for Winfrey’s network, titled “Queen Sugar.” The project is based on the book of the same name by Natalie Baszile and follows a woman from Los Angeles who inherits an 800-acre sugar cane farm in rural Louisiana. Filming will begin this fall.
“I loved this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN,” said Winfrey, who will also co-star in the series. “The story’s themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show.”
DuVernay added: “From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history,” said DuVernay. “To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful.”
