Alicia Keys is having the “Best Week Ever!”
The singer/songwriter is attending her first Sundance Film Festival as a producer and composer of “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete,” which premiered Friday. The film is directed by George Tillman, Jr., and tells the story of two young boys who survive the streets of Brooklyn on their own.
“It’s great because I love being part of bringing stories that you wouldn’t often hear to the world,” she said. “The fact that it was in my hometown – New York – that felt really good. The most important thing for me is that it looked and was so authentic.”
Keys, who is also gearing up to co-produce an HBO version of the Broadway play “Stick Fly,” found the process of scoring a film very rewarding.
“I think it really expanded me because it’s a beautiful collaborative process,” she said. “Being able to collaborate with (director) George (Tillman, Jr.), and he has such a cool feeling about music and is specific about how it related to each scene, and that was really interesting. There were some pieces that came really naturally to me and others that I had to kind of think more of how does that feel, what should that feel like?”
In addition to Sundance, Keys is performing at this year’s inauguration of President Barack Obama on Monday and will sing the National Anthem at this year’s Super Bowl in February. She will join fellow divas Beyoncé, who is headlining the Super Bowl Halftime show and Fantasia, who is lending her voice to the Annual Super Bowl Gospel Concert.
Keys recently performed at the 2013 BET Honors last weekend and is also prepping for her “Set the World on Fire” North American Tour with R&B crooner Miguel, which begins in March.
Congratulations Alicia, we are so looking forward to your performances.
