Oscar-winning screenwriter Tarrell Alvin McCraney‘s coming-of-age story Choir Boy will open on Broadway at the beginning of 2019 and we have some first look images of show.
I was first introduced to McCraney’s brilliant work back in 2008 when his show In the Red and Brown Water had its world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theater. He followed that up with Choir Boy in 2013.
Choir Boy synopsis reads as follows: For half a century, the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?
Jeremy Pope reprises his role as Pharos Jonathan Young along with Queen Sugar star Nicholas L. Ashe as Junior Blake, John Clay III as Anthony Justin “AJ” James, Chuck Cooper as Headmaster Marrow, Caleb Eberhardt as David Heard, J. Quinton Johnson as Bobby Marrow, Austin Pendleton as Mr. Pendleton and ensemble members Daniel Bellomy, Jonathan Burke, Gerald Caesar and Marcus Gladney.

Previews are currently underway and Opening Night is Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the Samuel J. Freidman Theatre in New York City. Click here for tickets!
