Grammy nominated singer, actress and Broadway diva Vanessa Williams and her daughter Jillian Hervey of Lion Babe appear on the cover of next month’s ESSENCE Magazine. The former Miss America looks absolutely stunning for the mother-daughter issue that salutes Williams’ return to primetime TV in VH1’s upcoming series “Daytime Divas.”

The show features Williams as the lead co-host of a popular talk show entitled “The Lunch Hour.” On screen, her and the other four co-hosts are best friends with five very different points of view, but behind the scenes, they inhabit a world of power struggles, cat fights and cocktails. The show is based on Star Jones‘ best selling book, Satan’s Sisters and also features Tichina Arnold, Norm Lewis, Patti LaBelle, Eve and Tasha Smith.

Inside the issue, both Williams and Hervey talk about their journeys in and out of the spotlight as well as hair and beauty goals. Take a look at more photos below + excerpts from their interview. The January issue of ESSENCE hits newsstands today!

“You have to go through the fire. Avoiding the pain is why most people never resolve it. You have to dig deep, sit in it and ugly-cry. Pretending it’s not there and keeping busy are a way of avoiding it,” says Williams about surviving setbacks.

“My hair was supposed to represent this freedom, and then it almost became a trap.” Hervey’s love-hate relationship with her hair has come full circle and now she proudly celebrates her natural coils. After participating in a hair panel during AfroPunk, she recalled being emotional at the sight of women who “were different versions of me. Everyone was creative and beautiful, and it felt so sacred,” says Hervey on her now famous lion mane.
