Veteran Broadway actress Terry Burrell is starring in a new one-woman show about the life of legendary stage and film star Ethel Waters for Alliance Theater’s “ETHEL.” The new Atlanta stage production, which was written by Burrell, takes flight beginning this Easter Weekend March 25-April 17.

In “ETHEL,” audiences get a glimpse into the magnificent and very complicated life of Waters, who was affectionately known as “Sweet Mama String Beans” and was once the highest paid performer on Broadway. She was also the first African-American actress to have a lead role in a television series.

The iconic actress, who epitomized the glamour of Black Vaudeville while successfully and lucratively crossing over into traditionally white performance venues, inspired directors and singers and song writers with her talent and versatility. Waters was also the first to record “Stormy Weather,” and later starred in the classic film “Cabin in the Sky.” She is also the great-aunt of 90’s EDM music star Crystal Waters.
