The event’s theme was “Honoring the Past While Celebrating the Present: 7 Years of Living African American History,” and featured a day-long dance workshop for 51 local Washington D.C. students.

The event began with a panel discussion hosted by Mrs. Obama and featured such iconic dancers as Alvin Ailey’s Judith Jamison, dance diva and award winning-director Debbie Allen, Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Virginia Johnson and “The Wiz Live” choreographer and hip hop dance sensation Fatima Robinson. Following the discussion was a presentation featuring the students that told African-American history through song and dance.
