That Queen Latifah knows how to keep a steady gig! The star of NBC’s The Wiz Live is gearing up to take on another musical role in the new Lee Daniels’ pilot for Fox.
According to VARIETY, Latifah will play the lead in a “Dreamgirls” inspired series about three young singers, who form a girl group with the hopes of becoming superstars in Atlanta’s cut-throat music scene. Latifah will portray Carlotta, a beauty salon owner who becomes a mother-like figure to the aspiring vocalists (Star, Alexandra and Simone) played by Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady.
The untitled show is currently being shot in Atlanta and is looking to get picked up for the 2016-17 season. It is rumored that transgender model Amiyah Scott is also a part of the project but no further information has been offered about the role she will play. It is also being said that the pilot is not a spin-off of Empire as had once been reported. However, if it’s picked up there is the possibility that the two shows would crossover.
RC will keep you posted as this project continues to develop!
