Emmy award-winning comedian, actor, and singer, Wayne Brady, will return to Broadway after 10 years this fall in the gender bending musical, “Kinky Boots.” Brady will take over the role of ‘Lola’ from Tony Award-winner, Billy Porter, beginning November 21.
“Kinky Boots” tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola. With Lola’s help, Charlie develops a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots. In the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all. The musical is based on the 2005 British film of the same name that featured Oscar-nominated actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the fabulous drag performer, ‘Lola.’
Brady was last seen on Broadway in the role of ‘Billy Flynn’ in the smash hit musical, “Chicago.” He was most recently seen on television as the host of the “BET Honors” and made a brief appearance on the network’s highly watched series, “Being Mary Jane.”
“I’m thrilled to join the ‘Kinky Boots’ family and unleash my inner Lola,” Brady said. “It’s the role of a lifetime! Billy and his prodigious talent have left some pretty big red boots for me to fill. Starring in a Broadway show of this caliber has been my dream since I started performing at age 16. I’m ready to jump in with both feet!”
