I’ve always found Celia Cruz to be one of the most fascinating entertainers to ever do it. Her voice…the elaborate costumes…that larger-than-life persona is what music legends are truly made of.
This fall, her rags-to-riches story will be depicted in a made-for-television film on Telemundo titled, “CELIA.” The project stars Jeimy Osorio as Cruz along with Modesto Lacén as her husband, Pedro Knight. Known as the “Queen of Salsa,” Cruz was one of the most respected female entertainers of the last generation and opened doors for other Hispanic and Latina performers including Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Selena and Jennifer Lopez. She recorded over 50 albums, won 7 Grammy Awards and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
After Cruz’s death in 2003, Oscar winning-actress Whoopi Goldberg had acquired the rights to her life story and was supposed to produce and star in a biopic of her own through her One Ho Production Company. According to PEOPLE, fans of the late star were not happy with Goldberg at the helm of the project nor with her portraying their beloved star. While that project never materialized, it would have been interesting to see how Goldberg would have approached the role.
