Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive photo of Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle as jazz legend Miles Davis. The picture shows Cheadle in true Miles fashion including his beloved trumpet, cigarette and classic Jheri Curl mullet. The film marks the actor’s directorial debut and has been supported by his crowdsourcing campaign at Indiegogo.
Miles Ahead is not your typical “birth to death” biopic. Instead, the film will focus solely on the time period leading up to Davis’ 1969 jazz-rock-fusion recording, In a Silent Way. Reportedly, this time marked his transition back into the music game after a five-year hiatus. The film will also take a closer look at his tumultuous marriage to his first wife Frances Taylor Davis.
“I want to tell a hot story that’s full of his music that feels impressionistic in that it finds a way to incorporate all his musical styles and influences and ideas. It needs to feel like his approach: ‘I don’t care about what happened before. I’m about what’s happening now and about what’s happening next.’ That’s Miles’ marching orders to me,” says Cheadle to EW.
The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Emayatzy Corinealdi and will begin shooting this month.
