Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Showtime has released a new teaser for its upcoming series Black Monday starring Don Cheadle and Regina King.

Black Monday is being described as follows: “The series takes audiences ‘back to October 19, 1987 – aka Black Monday, the worst stock market crash in Wall Street history.’ To this day, no one knows who caused it — until now. It’s the story of how a group of outsiders took on the blue-blood, old-boys club of Wall Street and ended up crashing the world’s largest financial system, a Lamborghini limousine, Don Henley’s birthday party and the glass ceiling.”

In addition to Cheadle and Hall, Black Monday also features Andrew Rannels, Yassir Lester and Michael James Scott.

The series will debut sometime in 2019.

Big Tigger and Marvel’s Nate Moore host special screening of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

I had the pleasure last night of covering and attending an advanced screening of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.”  The special preview took place at Atlanta’s Regal Cinema at Atlantic Station and was hosted by reality star and V-103 personality Big Tigger and Marvel’s executive producer Nate Moore.

Hundreds of students were invited from Morehouse, Spelman and CAU to see the third installment of the “Captain American” franchise and the first film in phase 3 of the Marvel cinematic universe.

In “Captain America: Civil War,” the Avengers are under scrutiny after another incident results in collateral damage. Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability that is headed by a governing body to oversee and direct their every more. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps, one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

The film stars Chris Evans as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America; Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man; Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow; Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier; Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon; Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye; Paul Bettany as Vision; and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/ Scarlet Witch. It also includes Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.

Nate Moore, Marvel’s Executive Producer

“Captain America: Civil War” also introduces two new characters—Don Cheadle as Colonel James Rhodes/War Machine and Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther. For Marvel fans, this appearance by Black Panther is preparation for his own film franchise which debuts in 2018 and will be directed by Creed‘s Ryan Coogler.

“We had to give Black Panther a real story line. He couldn’t just be a cameo. He had to be somebody who was really involved because its a great character and because we also wanted to do a stand alone movie. When we were writing the film, we knew we needed a character who would stand between Iron Man and Captain American and hold his own. And I believe his character does that. Once we cast Chadwick Boseman, all of a sudden you have a star in the making,” said Moore during our interview on the red carpet.

Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther

The Marvel executive went on to say that there is a lot planned for the Black Panther character and that he is very pleased with the ‘integrity’ Chadwick brings to the role.

“It was really Chadwick’s performance in ’42’ that got us excited. The intensity and integrity that he bought to Jackie Robinson is what we wanted T’Challa to inhabit.  We didn’t realize how good of an actor he was and I even think the other actors on set, once he got there were surprised by his intensity too. He brings a really interesting texture to the movie because he’s so different from the others,” explained Moore.

Look for Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War” when it opens in theaters on May 6. In the meantime, check out the trailer and more photos below:

WATCH the First Trailer for Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic ‘Miles Ahead’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Don Cheadle and Emayatzy Corinealdi lead an all-star cast in “Miles Ahead,” the highly anticipated biopic about jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.  The first trailer for the film was released this week and it debuts nationwide during Jazz Appreciation Month on April 1.

“Miles Ahead” is not your typical “birth to death” story and focuses primarily on a time period in the late 70’s when Davis was making a musical comeback after a five-year hiatus. It also takes a closer look at his estranged marriage to Frances Taylor Davis.  The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Keith Stanfield, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

“I want to tell a hot story that’s full of his music that feels impressionistic in that it finds a way to incorporate all his musical styles and influences and ideas. It needs to feel like his approach: ‘I don’t care about what happened before. I’m about what’s happening now and about what’s happening next.’ That’s Miles’ marching orders to me,” said Cheadle to Entertainment Weekly.

FIRST LOOK at Don Cheadle as Mile Davis in upcoming biopic ‘Miles Ahead’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive photo of Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle as jazz legend Miles Davis. The picture shows Cheadle in true Miles fashion including his beloved trumpet, cigarette and classic Jheri Curl mullet. The film marks the actor’s directorial debut and has been supported by his crowdsourcing campaign at Indiegogo.

Miles Ahead  is not your typical “birth to death” biopic. Instead, the film will focus solely on the time period leading up to Davis’ 1969 jazz-rock-fusion recording, In a Silent Way.  Reportedly, this time marked his transition back into the music game after a five-year hiatus. The film will also take a closer look at his tumultuous marriage to his first wife Frances Taylor Davis.

“I want to tell a hot story that’s full of his music that feels impressionistic in that it finds a way to incorporate all his musical styles and influences and ideas. It needs to feel like his approach: ‘I don’t care about what happened before. I’m about what’s happening now and about what’s happening next.’ That’s Miles’ marching orders to me,”  says Cheadle to EW.

The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg and Emayatzy Corinealdi and will begin shooting this month.

T.I. & Tiny are NOT headed to Splitsville

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Despite of all of the internet rumors, Atlanta’s “hip-hop” Huxtables, T.I. and Tiny are NOT heading to divorce court.  According to a report from TMZ, rumors began surfacing after a series of Instagram messages popped up on both of their accounts leading fans to believe that something was going wrong in the Harris household.

untitledOn top of that, the two were seen partying separately during last weekend’s Grammy Awards. Reportedly, Tiny was hanging with her girlfriends Tamar Braxton and Sevyn Streeter while T.I. was a ‘no show’ at the awards.

However, T.I. cleared up all of the alleged drama and told TMZ that he and his wife of three years got into an argument over ‘something pretty stupid’ but are not calling it quits. Apparently the argument was over Tiny wanting to walk the Grammy red carpet and watch the show while T.I. didn’t. Instead, they challenged each other on who would have the most fun that night.

Even Tiny’s BFF Shekinah chimed in on Instagram, telling fans not to “believe the hype.”

“People stop with the BS @majorgirl and @troubleman31 are good!!!! (They are still together) Don’t believe everything you hear!!!! Don’t believe the hype!!!!

In other T.I. news…

S&A/Indie Wire is reporting that the “King of the South” will appear on the award-winning Showtime series, House of Lies, beginning this Sunday, February 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. He joins acting veteran, Mekhi Phifer as childhood friends-turned-moguls who hire Don Cheadle’s character, Marty to help expand their business empire. The episode marks Cheadle’s directorial debut.

Kerry Washington, Don Cheadle, Alfre Woodard and Oprah Winfrey are up for Emmy’s tonight!

The 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are airing tonight at 8 p.m. EST on CBS and here is a quick rundown about the four African-American nominees.

Kerry Washington may very well make history tonight as the first African-American nominee to win in the category of “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.” Not since Cicely Tyson’s nomination in 1995 for Sweet Justice  has there been a Black female nominee. Washington’s role as Olivia Pope in the ABC political thriller Scandal  is without a doubt 2013’s most beloved TV character and most talked about as well. According to Indie WireScandal  was ABC’s most social program achieving over 4.3 million tweets during its second season, outperforming American Idol  by 56%. Washington will also present during tonight’s show with living legend Diahann Carroll.

Don Cheadle is up for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” for his role as Marty Kaan on Showtime’s House of Lies.  As previously reported, the show follows a group of management consultants who stop at nothing to get business deals done, even if it calls for extreme measures. Cheadle is also an Academy Award nominee for his role in 2004’s Hotel Rwanda  and is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. Environment Program. Cheadle won a Golden Globe this year as “Best Actor in a Comedy Series” for House of Lies.  Let’s hope lightening will strike twice again tonight!

Alfre Woodard is no stranger to the Emmy Awards having been nominated 18 times and winning four throughout her career.  Her nomination tonight is for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie,” and for her role as the feisty Ouiser in the Lifetime adaptation of Steel Magnolias.  The film was directed by Kenny Leon and featured an all-star cast African-American cast including Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Condola Rashad, Jill Scott, Tory Kittles and Adepero Oduye. Woodard is also an Academy Award and Grammy nominee and has won a Golden Globe and three Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Oprah Winfrey is up for “Outstanding Informational Series or Special” for her series, Oprah’s Master Class.  The show, which is executive produced by Winfrey, featured a number of heavy hitters during its second season including Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, Diahann Carroll and Berry Gordy. The Forbes  Most Influential Celebrity is a vet when it comes to the Emmy Awards. According to her website, “after accepting her seventh Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host and the 9th Emmy for The Oprah Winfrey Show,  Oprah decided to stop submitting herself and the show for Emmy consideration. To date, the show has won a total of 47 Emmy awards.”

Congratulations once again to the four nominees and good luck.

Casting News: Djimon Hounsou, Garcelle Beauvais, Justin Guarini and Don Cheadle

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Versatile actor Djimon Hounsou (pictured above) is getting ready to cast out devils in a upcoming horror/thriller entitled The Vatican Tapes.  According to Indie Wire, Hounsou will play a Vatican official called in to exorcise the demon. The film will begin shooting in July and also stars Michael Pena, Dougray Scott, Kathleen Robertson, Peter Anderson, Olivia Dudley, John Patrick Amedori and Alex Sparrow.

Former model turned actress Garcelle Beauvais is set to star in the  coming-of-age drama, Loose, produced by Meagan Good and Datari Turner. According to The Wrap, Beauvais will play single and not-so-good-mother to a young lady named Grace, who is trying to find her purpose in life. The role is described as an alcoholic, who repeatedly puts herself in abusive relationships, making them a priority over her own daughter. The indie film is also being produced by Dan Garcia.

Justin Guarini.jpg2

American Idol  alum Justin Guarini will play Paris in a new Broadway adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Indie Wire is reported that Guarini will try to win the affections of Condola Rashad, who is set to play Juliet alongside Orlando Bloom as Romeo. The production will have an interracial twist with the Capulets as a black family and the Montagues as a white family. The show will also be set in modern times and is being directed by David Leveaux.

Don Cheadle.jpg2

Last fall we reported that Golden Globe-winning actor Don Cheadle was in line to play legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis in a new biopic entitled Kill the Trumpet Player.  However, Cheadle tweeted this week that he was “looking for young, black, talented trumpet players known and unknown” for the film which is said to be directed by Antoine Fuqua. While it’s not clear what role these trumpet players will have in the film, we do know that it will take some liberties with Davis’ story and will be more of a gangster movie versus a standard biopic. Thank you Indie Wire.

RC will keep you posted on this and of the other films as more information becomes available.

Kerry Washington and Don Cheadle’s exclusive with ‘Variety’ + VIDEO

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Two of our favorite celebs Scandal’s  Kerry Washington and House of Lies’  Don Cheadle got together recently for a very intimate conversation with Variety  magazine. The two powerhouse actors talk candidly about staying employed in Hollywood, the issue of race and gender and the role of activism in this 30-minute video.

They also have an interesting discussion about network television programs versus cable television shows.  Both actors agree that the “most exciting writing and characters” are now found on the small screen and the hierarchy of film over television has definitely changed the acting game.
