Ooh, the plot thickens!
Last week, we reported that Aaliyah Houghton’s family was seeking legal action to stop the forthcoming biopic about the R&B singer that will air on Lifetime.
Now, Indie Wire is reporting a new twist in the film’s story that I’m sure is going to have her family in an uproar. Apparently, producers of the film are planning to depict (in some way) the alleged relationship and marriage of the young singer to R&B bad boy, R. Kelly. Apparently, executive producer Debra Martin Chase (Sparkle) released a statement about the sensitive issue and said it would done with the utmost respect.
“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect. Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”
It was rumored in the early 90’s that Aaliyah and R.Kelly were romantically linked and then secretly married in 1994 even though she was 15 and he was 27. A marriage certificate surfaced years later which showed Houghton age listed as 18-years-old. It was said that her parents annulled the marriage and both singers continued denying the allegations.
As previously reported, the biopic titled, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B stars Disney actress and singer, Zendaya as Houghton and is based on the bestselling book, Aaliyah More Than a Woman by former Time Magazine music editor Christopher Farley.
