Last year, we reported the fame director F. Gary Gray was attached to the biopic, Straight Outta Compton, a true story about the formation of gangsta rap group, NWA. The film, originally being developed by New Line, has now been picked up by Universal Studios and has added a new writer to the project.

According to S&A, Universal Pictures has hired Jonanthan Herman to write the latest draft for the film, which is also being produce by NWA member and famed actor-director, Ice Cube.

As previously reported, Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise of the influential hip hop group from Los Angeles which included Eazy-E (group founder), Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella. The group endured controversy due to the explicit nature of their lyrics, and was subsequently banned from many mainstream U.S. radio stations.  In spite of this, the group has sold over 10 million CD units in the U.S. alone.  At times the group is credited as the most important group in the history of hip hop/pioneers of gangsta rap!  Straight Outta Compton  was the group’s debut studio album featuring “F*** tha Police,”  a track that protested police brutality and racial profiling.

S&A is also reporting that no one has been cast in any of the roles even though Eazy-E’s son and daughter have expressed interest in playing their father in the film. Reportedly, Ice Cube has mentioned that every actor is going to have to earn their role and there would be no preferential treatment to anyone. He also mentioned that none of the living members would appear in the film.

RC will keep you posted as the project continues to develop legs.

What are your thoughts about the biopic Straight Outta Compton? Who would you cast in the roles of the notorious hip hop members?
