Tony-Award winning choreographer Bill T. Jones’ musical adaptation of the 70’s blackploitation classic, Super Fly is finally headed to Broadway.

According to Broadway World, after a couple of years of planning and several workshops, the musical will  arrive on the Great White Way later on this year, citing Tommy Mottola of the Mottola Group (the producers) as the source.

According to the casting notice, Super Fly is a mixed “drug pusher, stick-up artist and a child of the ghetto, he truly beats the system, outsmarting the corrupt police force so that he can break free and start a new life.”

So far, no announcements have been made regarding the cast even though it was rumored that American Idol alum Justin Guarini would play the lead role of Priest, aka Super Fly.

What has been confirmed is that the music of the late Curtis Mayfield will be used in the production along with other 70’s soul music icons. The show will also stay true to the film.

Bill T. Jones choreographed and directed the Tony award-winning musical Fela!, which is currently on national tour starring Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams. Fela! premiered on Broadway in 2009 and was produced by Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith.
