To watch media mogul Oprah Winfrey on television daily can be inspiring but to have her speak during your commencement ceremony…life changing. The 550 Spelman College graduates were priveleged to have Lady O participate in their graduation service this past Sunday. Winfrey urged the young women to strive for excellence. In doing so understand that it is imperative for service to be the focus of their lives. She also urged them to “never forget that you did not do this by yourself.”
Winfrey also shared three important keys to success: know yourself and what you want, have a vision for your life even if you don’t have a plan and find a way to serve and do the right thing. “Do the right thing, even when other people think it may not be.”
In 1993, Winfrey received an honorary doctorate from Spelman. During this year’s commencement she was presented with its Community Service Award to acknowledge her works globally.
