BET Networks has recently announced that its latest film project, “Being Mary Jane” will kick off the opening night of The 16th Annual Urban World Film Festival.
The original made for television movie about the life of a successful, single television anchor stars Gabrielle Union, Margaret Avery, Raven Goodwin, Richard Roundtree, Omari Hardwick, Richard Brooks and Tika Sumpter.
The film was written and directed by power couple Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, whose past work includes Girlfriends, The Game, Jumping the Broom and most recently, Sparkle.
“Being Mary Jane” which was originally called “Single Black Female” will spin off into a series starring Union.
The Urban World Film Festival takes place September 19-23 in NYC and features the best in urban cinema, digital and social media.
